A majority of people on the planet have no use for the latest and greatest versions of CPU and the associated chipset technologies for what they need to do day to day. They will benefit from the work of specialists in a variety of fields who do need that performance.

Comment Mainframes had layered patch sets (Score 1) 54

I remember being mildly surprised to see some mainframe software from IBM and Unisys being maintained as layers of patch sets upon patch sets, kind of like how SCCS used to keep things. Even today you build Yocto Linux from a somewhat recent set of sources files or repositories then apply a more limited number of patches on top of that. At least with the disassembly/reconstruction you start with the latest version. :-)

At the National Center For Atmospheric Research in the late 1980s through the early 2000s we had graphics and text output to Dicomed film recorders for years, with output available on 35 mm slides or 4" x 5" film sheets (color), microfiche (BW only) or various video tape formats. The users were producing their own presentations using the NCAR Graphics package or raster formats. When portable video projectors with VGA inputs became common the other output formats dropped off in use until the film/video tape output services were discontinued.
