Submission + - Dr. Laser: One of the World's Last Holographers (motherboard.tv)

MMBK writes: In the heyday of holography, back in the 1970s, there were four schools dedicated to the holographic arts around the world, and five studios in New York City alone. Today, there are only a few left in the world. And no one is holding the candle higher than Doctor Laser.

Submission + - 5 Impending Apocalypses in Our Near Future (motherboard.tv) 1

MMBK writes: "I’m not talking about World War III, some nuclear accident, or even the deadly impact of a meteor. If only we were so lucky.

No, these apocalypses are the ultimate consequences of our actions, the buildup of decades, even centuries of poor decision making. This reset will be slow and torturous, leaving us with eternal regret of what could have been."

Submission + - Viscosity of Saliva Changes Beliefs on Inertia (motherboard.tv)

MMBK writes: The main insight in this recent research is that inertia matters a lot more than previously understood, which means that earlier physics explanations are all wrong. Other important characteristics that help to explain this behavior are a fluid’s viscosity, the time it takes to return to its original shape after it is stretched, and the capillary time (time required for the surface of the fluid string to vibrate, were it to be plucked).

Submission + - Video Interview with the World's First Cyborg (motherboard.tv) 1

MMBK writes: Kevin Warwick seems like a normal guy until you find out he's the world's first cyborg and can control his wife's body through his brainwaves (she's also cybernetic). He considers 'The Terminator' a great influence and thinks those of us who don't "upgrade" could end up in the zoos of cyborgs and robots of the future.

Submission + - Musical Frankenstein Builds Violins From Guns, Axe (motherboard.tv)

MMBK writes: Thirty years ago, Ken Butler picked up an axe and decided that it would work really well as a violin in the crook of his neck. It worked. Now Ken continues to blur the lines between instruments and, well, as you’ll see, just about everything else.

Submission + - Google Alarm Buzzes You When You're Being Tracked (motherboard.tv) 2

tedlistens writes: Designed by Jamie Wilkinson during a week of programming called F*CK GOOGLE, Google Alarm notifies you with a somewhat obnoxious audio and visual alert whenever you visit a site with Google's various "oetracking bugs" present (Google Analytics, Google AdSense, YouTube embeds, API calls, etc.), all of which conspire to track your personal web browsing habits. Maybe someday soon we'll need one of these for real life too.

Submission + - Brooklyn-Moscow Inventors Best NASA with Spacesuit (motherboard.tv) 2

MMBK writes: Their accomplishment is impressive, as they have made significant progress in this field while working together across the world – Ted lives in Brooklyn, while Nikolay lives in Moscow. You may very well be wearing an FFD suit in the near future, as their aim is to provide affordable suits so that space travelers can own their own as they venture forth with increasing regularity, which is frankly not that far away. After all, the suit makes the moon man.

Submission + - Meet Paul B. Davis, Video Mosh Pioneer (thecreatorsproject.com)

MMBK writes: Paul B. Davis has many projects, including repurposing NES games, making albums from old Commodore 64 noises, and others, but our favorite is still his involvement in the advent of the video mosh. He explains the origins and how he did it in this video.

Sony Developing 3D Screen-Sharing Technology For Two Players 174

Stoobalou writes "Sony has recently published patent applications which will allow two-player 3D gaming on a single screen. The new technology could spell an end to split-screen gaming, but is unlikely to see the light of day for a few years at least. Sony's method would allow player one to see frames one and three whilst player two would see frames two and four. Current technology requires a display with a 120 Hz refresh rate so it seems likely that we'll have to wait for 240Hz screen technology to become commonplace before two-player 3D becomes a reality. PDF versions of the two applications are available."

Twitter Says Americans Are Happier In the Morning 88

DWF3046 writes "There are lots of things you can infer from Twitter. But while we're learning what we're eating or where we're flying, we haven't been able to use Twitter to determine how we're feeling. Researchers at Harvard and Northwestern have created a video that shows the mood in the US, as inferred using over 300 million tweets, over the course of the day. The results? The early morning and late evening appear to provide the highest levels of happiness. Geographically, the data points to a significantly happier west coast, which is consistently three hours behind the east coast."

Submission + - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Internet (motherboard.tv) 1

MMBK writes: Our friends at JESS3 have unveiled The Ex-Blocker. It’s a Firefox and Chrome plugin that erases all name and likeness of your ex from the internet, even if they become a meme, or the president. You’ll no longer have to threaten to delete your Facebook account or concoct an elaborate e-hoax to assuage the reality-shattering complications that are born from break-ups. Simply construct an internet that omits bad vibes all together.
