It's not all about academics. Schools provide opportunities to develop and hone social skills, to forge friendships and to discover new interests.
Home schooled students need to be involved in these things (granted this is quite possible).
I don't quite understand the problem of standardized tests. If you don't have a standardized test, how will you compare the students? The test should be a guideline as to what is considered common knowledge for students of a particular schooling level. Take it with a grain of salt.
