The reason folks don't like it is because it's akin to push-polling where you ask the surveyee if s/he's heard any of the rumors about the candidate being a devil-worshiping spawn of Satan who eats children, and then ask if they would vote for him/her.
In other words, it's not like it's a "real" survey (which are not found on the web).
Seems like anyone who thinks any of those ratings means anything is a non-statistician. OTOH, if you get more money with higher ratings, then there is certainly an incentive to push the rating any way possible.
I think it's brilliant. And hard to prevent. I certainly can't rate the app until after I've used it for some time. Apple's gonna have a conniption fit over this because they're the ones who are monetizing the ratings, not anyone else, but they're gonna blame it on the devs.
