If Slashdot still had the readership that caused the "Slashdot effect" decades ago, some news sites might be looking at Slashdot for compensation.

That's a contradiction. The Slashdot effect happened because the readership attempted to access the site.
The joke that the Slashdotters comment without RTFA is borne out of the fact that often we couldn't RTFA for a few hours after a story was posted.

Comment The desktop itself is dead (Score 1, Insightful) 108

There will never be a "year of the desktop", because the desktop is dead. The reality is that such a large percentage of the population use mobile devices for the majority of their interactions that whatever happens on the desktop is irrelevant. I find it bizarre because the mobile experience is so abysmal compared to a proper desktop. But I've never understood the mainstream, and I guess this is just another example of that.

Maybe when the Republicans get the House and Senate in November, they can pass a law allowing all debts to be paid either in USD or BTC, just because USD is hitting hyperinflation, Zimbabwe style, while BTC is holding strong, and has intrinsic value (which fiat currencies don't have), due to the PoW structure.

What makes you say BTC has intrinsic value?
What makes you say BTC is not a fiat currency?

Movie theaters are relics of an obsolete technology. 50 years from now, it's going to seem weird that we had whole buildings dedicated to watching video together.

Shows that last about 2 hours and cost several tens of millions to make are constraints of that movie building, which now just don't apply. You still can make content in that format, but it's not required.
