Submission + - PayPal cuts off Wikileaks (domaincensorship.com)

lothos writes: PayPal has released a statement on their blog: “PayPal has permanently restricted the account used by WikiLeaks due to a violation of the PayPal Acceptable Use Policy, which states that our payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity. We’ve notified the account holder of this action.”

This move comes right on the heels of Amazon cutting off hosting for wikileaks.org and EasyDNS.net terminating DNS services for wikileaks.org.

Submission + - PayPal stops WikiLeaks payments (thepaypalblog.com)

mpawlo writes: It seems like Wikileaks is finally starting to learn that corporations do not provide free speech or services as such. This week Wikileaks has not been able to use Amazon's cloud service, then its domain name hosting got into trouble, then some of its other hosting disappeared and now Paypal "permanently restricts" Wikileaks account. This due to EULA violations, namely "payment service cannot be used for any activities that encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in illegal activity". The Web and the Internet is fantastic to facilitate free speech, but in practice there is no real safeguards for it, when the sh*t hits the fan for real. You may be a supporter or a non-supporter to Wikileaks, but that is in my opinion the real story here.

Activision Wants Consoles To Be Replaced By PCs 344

thsoundman writes with this excerpt from thegamersblog: "We live in a world where we have multiple platforms for gaming: PC, PS3, 360, Wii, etc. Each platform has varying amounts of power when it comes to playing games. Activision, one of the leading cross-platform publishers, wishes to move away from the 'walled gardens' set by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. ... [Activision CEO Bobby] Kotick’s solution is to turn to the PC, where it can set its own model for pricing — not unlike what Blizzard has done with World of Warcraft and Battle.net. Kotick stated that Activision would 'very aggressively' support the likes of HP and Dell in any attempt at making an easy 'plug-and-play' PC that would hook up directly to the TV."

Fallout Online Website Arises Amid Legal Battle 85

Rumors of a Fallout MMO have been swirling for years, made all the more credible by hints from the legal battle between Bethesda and Interplay over licensing for the franchise. Now, Interplay has quietly created a teaser website for Fallout Online, offering beta sign-ups. Quoting Massively: "Currently, there isn't much there, just a brief glimpse at a workshop desk with various Fallout references to the Master, Brahmin, and Nuka-Cola before a form obscures the screen. ... It looks legit, too: Interplay is promoting Fallout Online from their main website, and the new teaser site is indeed registered to Interplay Entertainment Corp."

Pentagon Seeking Out Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange 628

a user writes "The Pentagon is desperately seeking the 'cooperation' of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, in order to stop him from releasing over 250,000 pages of confidential foreign policy documents. The documents were allegedly provided to Assange by Bradley Manning, the same solider who leaked a video showing a US Army helicopter killing unarmed civilians and international press correspondents."

Submission + - Wikileaks Founder, Hunted By Pentagon, Hit Squad? (huffingtonpost.com) 5

linzeal writes: The US government has been giving signs in the past 48 hours that it is increasingly worried that Wikileaks may be on the verge of publishing a batch of up to 260,000 secret State Department cables involving raw commentary on Middle Eastern leaders, investigators are searching for founder Julian Assange to no avail. Early this morning the Wikileaks twitter page posted the following. " Any signs of unacceptable behavior by the Pentagon or its agents towards this press will be viewed dimly. " than 2 hours later announced that Julian would be appearing at an .investigate journalism conference in Las Vegas tonight, but did not show up. Daniel Ellsberg, the military analysis who leaked the infamous Pentagon Paperssuggested the pentagon might be willing to kidnap or kill him to keep him quiet. Nixon allegedly organized a hit squad for Ellenburg with the threat to " totally incapacitate him on the steps of the capital building " and since Obama has given orders for an extra-judicial execution of an American citizen abroad there is a worrying reality that the US is willing to use force to control those whose actions would incite violence against the United States. Whatever is in those cables may be worth killing over.

Submission + - Hydrogen car to be open-source

krou writes: The BBC is reporting that a hydrogen car that can go 80km per hour and can travel 322km before refueling is to go open-source. The company behind the car, Riversimple, claims they are distributing the engineering designs to the 40 Fires foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which will make them open source. "The idea, they say, is to allow local manufacturing in small plants .. designs can be adjusted for local markets, using locally sourced parts or materials [and the] agreement will be such that if the designs are improved by a local manufacturer, those improvements will be sent back" to improve the production line. The car only weighs 350kg, is made of carbon fibre composites, has no combustion engine, gearbox, or transmission, and "its four motors are powered by a fuel cell rated at just six kilowatts". "Riversimple's solution is to power the car also from so-called "ultracapacitors", which store large amounts of electric charge and, crucially, can release that charge nearly instantly to provide the power needed to accelerate from rest. The ultracapacitors are charged as the vehicle brakes to a halt, converting the energy of the moving car into stored energy." Riversimple have also partnered with gas company BOC to install hydrogen stations in areas where prototypes of the car will be launched.
