Comment Unavoidable result of identity politics (Score 1, Interesting) 122

Every country/territory/group that embraces it is heading into life of medieval style raids and sieges within decades. If you keep raiding your more technologically advanced neighbor and killing its civilians, you will eventually be neighbors with a barbarian that has better weapons. No exceptions - Pearl Harbor resulted in Hiroshima and 9/11 resulted in Abu Ghraib. CHAZ resulted in Gaza-like conditions in US within weeks. The only way to avoid it is to embrace individualism instead of tribalism and leave in peace with other human beings as full equals. I guess a fallback is to be weak enough that your opponent can defeat you before going full medieval.

Also, isn't Texas the state trying to claim slavery is "involuntary relocation" as well as other nutty stuff? Instead of pushing a political agenda, Texas should focus on basic facts and STEM.

Nope, that was a failed school board proposal. I am sure there is some nutty stuff taught in red states, I remember hearing of creationism textbook inserts. However, I don't think they waste as much instruction time on right wing nutcasery as blue states do on CRT. We looked at a Catholic school as a high school option not because we are interested in religion but because apart from divinity class they actually teach real stuff pretty well. Same deal here.

We had BASIC in middle school back in Soviet Union, 12 year olds are plenty smart to code. As to "you can't cram", it applies to anything - math, biology, critical theory, and yet all of these things are taught in elementary schools. Might as well choose a few things which are useful and introduce them in interesting, age appropriate manner. Making an animated cartoon is a form of programming.

Before anyone gets triggered, yes Republicans have a not of nutcasery - abortions should be legal until some reasonable time, people shouldn't keep tanks and bazookas in their driveways to defend themselves, yada yada.

Yet when it comes to education, California, the biggest blue state is a joke and way behind red states like Texas. In Silicon Valley, computer science is only offered as a high school elective, with no general literacy programs in elementary and middle schools.

Is there a reasonable doubt that education can solve the problems like racial inequity and climate change (largely an engineering issue) in a single generations while there is absolutely no chance these problems will be solved without a highly education population. Now granted, there are factors beyond school curriculum that determine academic success, but school curriculums and quality of instruction are certainly a factor.

Why is my kids' summer reading list is then composed entirely of books about black or gay suffering with no Python in the mix? Can we fire all the excess administrators and DEI officers and use the money to teach subjects that will help kids support themselves as adults and contribute to society in tangible ways?

Purely on education, I would go for a Republican governor in CA right now, knowing that democratic majority would keep various Republican-specific nutcasery in check. And I do think education is perhaps the most important issue in long view.

And eventually artificial stimuli like personalized AI porn or say like buttons can overwhelm your dopamine receptors and displace any interest in the real world just like fentanyl. True, you are not likely to immediately die from porn overdose, but you are not going to pass on your genes either, so evolutionary speaking it comes to the same thing.

Now it's true that a nerd living in parents basement is currently unlikely to be able to have sex with a real life woman. One can even suggest that porn has its place to numb pain of loneliness in such cases, just like morphine has its place to numb physical pain. But that can't be the long term solution. Not all women are gorgeous, or fit/skinny, or have charming personalities and a nerd is likely to have some income and not be abusive or a player. Conversely, nerds need to be realistic about their own caliber and women that in their league.

Not so long ago, if you didn't find anyone on your own, family/church/matchmaker etc found someone in your own ballpark to satisfy your physical needs, get married and have kids with. Maybe a better role for AI is to make this process more accurate and efficient rather than make people just give up on each other and retreat to phantasy world? After all, a mediocre human being can still grow to be your friend over time, can AI do that?

Communism in China, materialism and wokism in the West - all seem to add up to the same result. Now in case you guys are thinking I am some kind of religious extremist who wants government to legislate morality, nope. Just like one should be legally allowed to drive a gas guzzler, one should be legally allowed to work 60 hours a day at a tech giant and have sex orgies with new people every night, as a matter of personal freedom. But it should be understood that both of these choices are not optimum for long term human flourishing and are only mostly harmless when large majority of humans make better choices.

Now in terms of incentives and social recognition, we should really focus making the right choices easier. A small part of it can be government incentives, such as affordable housing/education/healthcare and guaranteed family leave. We must be mindful that all of these things raise taxes and regulations and can easily end up hurting people they are aiming to help, especially given how horrendously inefficient US government is. But a much bigger part are social values. We have a whole pride months celebrating people who are not raising many children. And on the other hand, a culture of worship for filthy rich who are partly this way because they have prioritized their careers over family. Whoever is celebrating hardworking parents who may not have glamorous jobs, but who are making it possible for the next generation of humans to celebrate whatever they choose to celebrate?

For a 100 people in the world for whom it's potentially not the case - I really don't care, but please conduct your culture wars in private and don't spoil the fun for the rest of us.

For physical sports, there are risks of injury and physical burn out before your rank is even established, so biological sex specific contests make sense at least to start with. I don't think it's entirely clear that a 50 year old guy is likely to have an overwhelming physical edge over a 20 year old lady in every sport, so a system that never lets them enjoy a friendly game is suspect. Again, outliers spoiling fun for the rest of us.

But for chess, losing a bunch of games is not likely to permanently ruin your physical and mental health. So maybe take time about finding your right group of fellow players and don't stress about your demographics?
