Submission + - Irish ISP wins court action against record labels

Terranex writes: Irish ISP UPC has won a high court case brought against it by record companies attempting to force it to block illegal downloading. The judge in the case agreed with the record companies' positions but stated Ireland does not have laws in place to allow for the "blocking, diverting or interrupting of internet communications intent on breaching copyright."

Competing ISP Eircom submitted to the record companies demands last year, blocking access to The Pirate Bay and initiating a 'three-strikes' system.

Comment At least SOMETHING is good value in Ireland (Score 1) 827

Here in Ireland I'm on a pay-as-you-go plan with Meteor. Spending â20 a month gets me unlimited free calls and unlimited free texts to other Meteor numbers. As the majority of people I call and text are Meteor, I can spend that â20 on 3G browsing etc. I could also change this plan to unlimited free texts to any network if I wanted, sacrificing the free calls. For a non-business customer, it is excellent value.

Comment SMS shapes Life. (Score 1) 437

Only SMS has had a massive impact on my life. Seven years ago, Meteor, my operator, introduced free Meteor-Meteor Calls and Texts. This instigated a period of huge amounts of texting between myself and friends. Taking a small group of two dozen of my friends and acquaintances, I would estimate that hundreds of thousands of texts have been sent among us over this period. Relationships have been made and broken over SMS, and not one of us would disagree that SMS has been the most influential technology out of this list.
