The only reason Origin has traction is because of exclusives (Mass Effect, Battlefield games, etc) and UPlay used to force install with games bought on Steam (I think I had to have it installed to play Driver). EA/Origin also produce the games themselves, so they have a lot more clout in restricting them to certain delivery platforms.

Yeah, it's fine. There's no advantage to it though, other than a slightly different interface to learn. And the drawback of invasive anti-privacy options - which are fairly easily disabled. Most average end users don't really give a shit about their privacy anyway.

You need a third party program just to get a normal start button back. The one that is default (I don't know if it came with 10, or that upgrade to 10 they released a while back that added the "Linux shell") is CLOSE and much better than the Windows 8 bullshit, but the search (Win+R and type program name, how I open most of my programs) is ridiculously slow. The third party option - Classic Shell - is way better, but it's still a third party app that I doubt most businesses are going to roll out for their employees.

That said, Windows 10 is pretty much "fine" for the average user who doesn't care about privacy. Facebook works. Youtube works. Office works.

That's the problem though, there is no discernable advantage *at all* to the average user. Shit, I'm a power user, and the nicest thing about it is the "Linux shell", but I'd rather just run VMs anyway. I'd go back to Windows 7 happily but I just don't care enough.

I haven't been on Slashdot in a long time, but that used to be a joke around here whenever there was an optimistic news story about Linux on the desktop. I love (prefer) Linux on the desktop. Software requirements holding me back from fully embracing it.

The only thing holding me back from a Linux desktop at home is gaming. Too many games just don't run well enough - even with a beast of a system, can't get 144hz reliably without any glitches. :( I run it in a VM 24/7 though, and do all of my internet browsing and most of my work in it. But Windows has to be on the hardware for me.

Used to get those fake google business calls to my cell, and finally decided to do this. The guy had no foreign accent (sounded western US), and it didn't even change when he got angry. After ~5 minutes of bullshit, he asked me my company name. I asked him his. He asked me mine. Back and forth. Finally, he got a little pissed while asking, so I said "My company name is fuck you." He said "Thanks for wasting my time, expect a lot more calls!" and then he hung up. I didn't get any more calls.

I'll only eat grass-fed natural American or Northern European . It costs a little more, sure, but peace of mind is priceless.

And I am very excited to see they want to use this for 'learning'. Great, 'learning' from an offline dump of Wikipedia. What's going to happen when hundreds of thousands of children in developing nations get a dump with some vandalism in it? Will they learn that George W. Bush is the spawn of some underworld creature, or Barack Obama is an Islamic terrorist born in Kenya? How will they respect the British elite military frogmen when they believe them to be half-men half-frog creatures that live in the sea?
