Oh no, change! Unity was a good idea and so was Upstart. It just turns out that systemd beat them out and Unity was a huge maintenance burden.

Not to give the rest of the world a pass, but in a world where Instagram, Tiktok and Doubleclick exist, Ubuntu embedding (with user consent) online-unified search or opting-in to crash reports is not "spyware". It's fine to be a purist, but keep perspective.

Ubuntu's goal is to make money. Who better to model after than the profitable open-source company?

TLS and IPSec still make a difference, for now. The idea that WiFi sniffing would be a vector for obtaining company secrets is ludicrous. If you are worried about nation states or competitors eavesdropping on your physical location, there's a lot more to worry about with analyzing key strokes with a camera, or a directional audio antenna.

So many subs are karma farms for accounts that are 1 year old or more, with zero post history, submitting generic garbage to lightly moderated subs.

Then you have myriad propaganda subs that explicitly ban debate or any questioning of narratives, like WorkersStrikeBack, Libertarian, Conservative, and a host of other related subs.

The only subs that have a semblance of decent moderation these days are some of the traditional big subs like AskHistorians, Science, smaller hobby subs, and geographical subs.

PHEVs to me are the most practical 1:1 shift we can make in the near term to reduce gas consumption. Charging infra isn't there and won't be for years to support the current driving habits of people. Many don't have access to chargers. PHEV can, when charging is available, reduce gas consumption dramatically.

Even regular hybrids decrease consumption by 30%+.

And yeah, we should be promoting e-bikes and NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) for around-town travel. No need for 5000 lb cars to go to the grocer a mile away.

We can tell employers they must not discriminate on certain things, must pay certain wages,.must give certain breaks, must provide certain fringe benefits. If a company is obviously avoiding the rights of employees to unionize by putting a token wedge "contractor" in the middle, I figure the government can decide whether that's a distinction without a difference.

Thank you for adding some context and first hand data. I know several talented people who work at Dell who are remote, and it will be Dell's loss if they go.

Besides, they're a worldwide operation with departments spread out across the US, EMEA doing similar roles, even in the same meetings multiple times a week. For a company like this, it is either being done to justify real estate investment, or because they can't say "okay, IT can stay remote but accounting must come into the office".
