OK, so *what* is attracting the lightning??

Whats most likely happened is the NBN Tech who put the box (DPU) that converts the fiber line to a copper line has not installed a earth rod.
The Lighting strike hitting a nearby tree then sends a power surge through any conductive wires nearby and because the copper wires are not properly earthed (grounded) this spike gets sent to the NBN modem/router which is the first device in the circuit so it gets fried.

Comment Chernobyl was designed so plutonium was removable (Score 1) 119

Of course Chernobyl was producing plutonium! That (is) a bit like asking if an aquarium is wet.

Every uranium reactor produces plutonium

The Chernobyl RBMK reactors were Graphite moderated instead of Water moderated
this meant that the fuel rods could be removed while it was still operating which makes the high grade plutonium produced
much easier to remove and is similar in design to the reactors used to make Nuclear weapons.

Comment Richard Stallman and GNU killed UNIX (Score 4, Informative) 280

People do you not know your Geek history ?

It was Richard Stallman getting pissed off because he wasn't allowed across to proprietary code that led to the GNU Manifesto in 1985.
The GNU Manifesto was an idea to produce a non proprietary UNIX compatible OS system and software.

Richard than formed the GNU foundation (Gnu not Unix) which produced tools like Emacs, GCC and GNU MAKE it also promoted the idea of copyleft and
developed the GNU General Public License. The one thing they did not produce was a Kernel.

In 1991 Linus Torvalds came along with his Linux kernel and the rest is history.

Much (I don't know what %) of the cost of building and maintaining roads and bridges that roads go over is paid for out of gasoline taxes. So much so that it's an issue in some states (Mississippi is one) whether the cost of registering an electric car (which of course pays no gasoline tax) should be increased to compensate.

Yes I agree , It will be certainly interesting to see how this problem is solved as people these days do not like paying taxes
which is what this increased registration fee will look like.

Don't hide behind an Anonymous Post if your going to abuse.

I was just pointing out to the previous poster that for an Industry to grow and survive it needs public funding and I thought the example of cars and roads being built with public funding is a good example.
Whats stupid in that ?

Yes , China is replacing fairly new subcritical plants, by western standards , with ultra-supercritical ones. https://www.americanprogress.o...

"Base Load" is the minimum output of a power plant before it has to be turned off completely

without Coal fired Powerstations there would be no need for the term baseload. Now in the article I linked we have two very distingished professors in their fields who are saying the same thing, could they be wrong ?
