As Goethe once said: Sorry for writing this long letter, I didn't have time for a shorter one.

I really liked this quote, so I decided to look it up. It was actually Pascal who said it. The original quote, as translated from french: "The present letter is a very long one, simply because I had no leisure to make it shorter."

It's not a drop in technology expenses, it's an increase in other spending. If you look at the actual income statement ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/foundation/4/4f/FINAL_08_09From_KPMG.pdf pdf page 5), you can see the HUGE increase in salaries from 1.1M to 2.2M. Compare that 100% increase to the internet hosting, which increased about 50% (from 537k to 822k).

Transferring from one computer to another on a LAN is much different from actually routing traffic. You'll almost always get close to full speed from a consumer level router when transferring from within the network. It becomes much more difficult to maintain speeds when actual routing is going on. Consumer level routers rarely come close to handling a full 100mbit of traffic when actual routing is involved.

I don't see why there has to be anything in between. When I lived in Hong Kong, I wasn't thinking, "boy it sure would be nice to have some small device to get me from the MTR/KCR/Bus/Ferry/Light Rail to my destination." I walked the 5 or 10 minutes after the "arteries" ended. We shouldn't be thinking about how to improve after people get off the mass transit, we should be thinking about how to improve the mass transit.
