Pentagon Makes Good On Plan To Destroy Critical Book 306

mykos writes "Remember when the Pentagon said they were arranging a taxpayer-funded, government-sponsored book burning a couple weeks ago? Well, they made good on that threat, purchasing 9,500 copies of the book to be destroyed. The publisher, St. Martin's Press, has redacted anything the Pentagon told them to redact in the upcoming second run of the book. They Department of Defense has not yet paid for the burned books, but says they are 'in the process.' Pentagon spokeswoman Lt. Col. April Cunningham gave this statement: 'DoD decided to purchase copies of the first printing because they contained information which could cause damage to national security.' Whew, looks like we're safe now."

The Joke Known As 3D TV 594

harrymcc writes "I'm at IFA in Berlin — Europe's equivalent of the Consumer Electronics Show — and the massive halls are dominated by 3D TVs made by everyone from Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic to companies you've never heard of. The manufacturers seem pretty excited, but 3D has so many downsides — most of all the lousy image quality and unimpressive dimensionality effect — that I can't imagine consumers are going to go for this. 'As a medium, 3D remains remarkably self-trivializing. Virtually nobody who works with it can resist thrusting stuff at the camera, just to make clear to viewers that they’re experiencing the miracle of the third dimension. When Lang Lang banged away at his piano during Sony’s event, a cameraman zoomed in and out on the musical instrument for no apparent reason, and one of the company’s representatives kept robotically shoving his hands forward. Hey, it’s 3D — watch this!'"

'The ultimate result could be lower crime rates, at a reduced cost'

Where is the evidence to this? As I already mentioned in a previous post on similar topic, gang leaders already successfully continue with their business even while incarcerated, and this retarded measure will only make their job even easier. Once again, the law-abiding citizens will end up looking as fools and criminals will be laughing in the face of their victims and the society as whole.

'and with considerably less inhumanity in the bargain.'

Why should humane treatment even be an issue, especially when we are talking about most ruthless and unrepentant criminals, such as rapists, gang leaders and assassins? When will the society finally realize and admit that certain individuals can only be stopped from committing further crimes by means of physical elimination?

Gecko Inspired Robot Climbs Walls at Stanford 56

telomerewhythere writes "Stanford mechanical engineer Mark Cutkosky is using the biology of a gecko's sticky foot to create a robot that climbs. In the same way the small reptile can scale a wall of slick glass, the Stickybot can climb smooth surfaces with feet modeled on the intricate design of gecko toes. The team's new project involves scaling up the material for humans. A technology called Z-Man, which would allow humans to climb with gecko adhesive, is in the works."

What's the difference between a used care salesman and a tech recruiter? The used car salesman knows he's lying. Sure it's a joke but there is a lot of truth to that statement.

I can only confirm this. After many encounters with recruiters over the years, I tend to get really surprised when I stumble upon one who is not completely dishonest. Remember folks, a recruiter has the capacity to screw your life very badly, so practice caution.

The problem is that people view social networking as just some sort of big ole' party. Most people I know can't believe I won't accept any and every Facebook friend request. For me, it is someone I know that I would consider a friend, even if fairly distantly. For most people, the more the merrier. They just say "yes" to anything.

And this disproves one of the greatest fallacies about social networks, the one that somebody's network of contacts is an evidence of his identity.

I smell a rat and call it BS. The original story is from a tabloid, who have no reputation or scruples. Easily corrupted. The other papers just repeat the tabloid, risking none of their reputation.

Don't forget that the first one to report this news was Expressen, the only competitor to Aftonbladet, the "newspaper" Assange was supposed to write for. Coincidence? You tell me.

First of all I would like to state that I am NOT a racist. Sweden has a huge problem with immigrants committing crime and they are responsible for a huge majority of the assault rapes and other rapes as well. The Swedish media is of course covering this up, but if we look at Norway for example the case is the same there. And lets not forget Sweden takes in much more immigrants than Norway.

It is very sad for the freedom of speech and democracy in Sweden that people who point out the downsides of massive and often uncontrolled immigration have to defend themselves from being labeled as "racists".

Let me congratulate you for your bravery to write this, anonymously or not.

Yeah, shoot the sociopathic messenger, who is a general nutcase...
