Submission + - Nanofactories to heal you

Roland Piquepaille writes: "Imagine yourself taking a pill that will detect a disease, build the remedy and deliver the drug where it's necessary to heal you. Even if it looks like science fiction, researchers at the University of Maryland are working on this, by building magnetic nanofactories to make and deliver drugs — at least in their labs. For example, "these ingested nanofactories, using magnetism, could detect a bacterial infection, produce a medication using the body's own materials, and deliver a dose directly to the bacteria. The drug would do its work only at the infection site, and thus not cause any side effects." Even if the results of this research project are promising, these nanofactories will not be used to heal you before a while because several problems need to be solved, such as 'disguising' these nanofactories before they're attacked by your body. Read more for additional details and a picture describing the assembly and the use of these magnetic nanofactories."

New Version of Xbox 360 Looking More Likely 106

Engadget is just one of a number of sites running 'confirmations' of a new iteration of the Xbox 360 hardware. The new black-coloured console is said to include an HDMI port and a larger hard disk drive (120 gigs). While the code-name Zephyr has been bandied about online for quite some time now, Engadget is saying it will be released under the name 'Elite'. Initially to be sold as a third SKU (alongside the Core and Premium packs), when the initial black run sells out the hardware in the Elite will take the place of the Premium sku. An HD-DVD drive will not be incorporated into the unit. All this should be taken with a grain of salt, as the entire thing stems from 'sources' and a supposed article in the upcoming issue of Game Informer magazine; Microsoft has not yet confirmed anything.

Submission + - Xbox Live accounts stolen

jasoncart writes: "Reports are growing across the web that many Xbox Live accounts linked to the new Windows Live service may have been stolen by hackers. Apparently, most of the hacked accounts are linked with Windows Live IDs, and sites like Xbox.com and others contain a number of complaints from gamers who believe their accounts have been hijacked."

Submission + - Flash put to good use. User created content.

An anonymous reader writes: We're finally seeing Flash — now in its 9th version — being put to some good use. Meta driven it becomes what it promised years ago. This A List A Part article http://alistapart.com/articles/semanticflash shows one aspect of it, enabling Joe User and his gardener too, to make their sites W2.0 savvy. I seriously like the idea behind http://www.purposegames.com/ where users upload images to create their own knowledge games with a pretty simple flash module. All in all a good time for us who stand with one leg in the designer arena, and the other on the developer scene.

Submission + - Novell humor: Linux video shot at "Get a Mac&#

coondoggie writes: "This is great. Novell takes on the Get a Mac ads with a Linux video ad of its own. Here you'll see the usual suspects, PC and Mac kind of trading insults but they are interrupted by a pretty woman — Linux is her name and their destruction is her game. Or something like that. In addition here's a bonus Get a Mac ad that's a pretty funny shot at Microsoft's Vista security. http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/1272 3"

NASA Think Tank to be Shut Down 132

Matthew Sparkes writes "NASA will likely shut down its Institute for Advanced Concepts, which funds research into futuristic ideas in spaceflight and aeronautics. The move highlights the budget problems the agency is facing as it struggles to retire the space shuttles and develop a replacement. The institute receives $4 million per year from NASA, whose annual budget is $17 billion. Most of that is used to fund research into innovative technologies; recent grants include the conceptual development of spacecraft that could surf the solar system on magnetic fields, motion-sensitive spacesuits that could generate power and tiny, spherical robots that could explore Mars."

Submission + - DS Could Be Best Selling Video Game Platform Ever

njkid1 writes: "Nintendo's DS handheld has taken the industry by storm; that's no secret. In Japan the Nintendo portable has been out-shipping Sony's PSP on a nearly three-to-one basis. Moreover, in 2006 the DS almost single handedly elevated the Japanese video game market out of its previous doldrums. On this side of the Pacific, not only is the DS consistently outselling the PSP, but it often outsells all consoles. In February, the DS was once again No.1 with 485K units sold.http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id =15549&ncid=AOLGAM000500000000021"

Submission + - Russian Trojan Powering Massive ID-Theft Ring

Buchanan's Toys writes: "Researchers at SecureWorks have stumbled upon a massive identity theft ring using state-of-the-art Trojan code to steal confidential data from thousands of infected machines in the U.S. The Gozi Trojan, which connects to a server in Russia, has so far pilfered information from more than 5,200 home computers with 10,000 account records. The records retrieved included account numbers and passwords from clients of many of the top global banks and financial services companies (over 30 banks and credit unions were represented), the top US retailers, and the leading online retailers."

Slobs Found To Be More Productive Than Neatniks 396

writertype writes "Are you a slob? Do you pile papers on top of folders on top of game boxes? Here's the thing that those anal neat people can't even conceive of: you're more productive than they are. That's the conclusion of "A Perfect Mess: The Hidden Benefits of Disorder," by Eric Abrahamson and David Freedman, a new book that argues neatness is overrated, costs money, wastes time and quashes creativity."

Windows Vista, More Than Just a Pretty Face 381

Nash writes "Ars Technica takes a look under the hood of Vista, discussing the need for a new API and comparing the graphics engine in Vista to that of Mac OS X. 'With Windows Vista it will be possible to implement Exposé properly-with live window updates and low system overhead. That said, it doesn't thus far look like Microsoft will be doing anything so useful as Exposé. Though the blurred glass effect is rather attractive, it's not exactly useful. Other visual effects include miniature window previews when the mouse cursor is hovered over taskbar buttons and an upgraded alt-tab device, and Flip3D.'"

Submission + - Player-Centered Gaming. Now There's an Idea

Actual Reality writes: "The way I look at the world is as a simulation, that there are all these things happening, and there's a state of the world," Wright said, laying out the basis of his talk at South by Southwest earlier this week. "And a lot of these things cascade into the next state of the world. This is kind of how a computer simulation works...certain things are causing chains in other things." http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/mar20 07/id20070321_649575.htm?campaign_id=rss_tech

Submission + - Promising Fusion Research Snuffed Out

Stanistani writes: "For 11 years physicist Robert Bussard quietly worked on Boron Fusion research for the U.S. Navy. Just as his experiments promised to bear fruit, the funding ran out, and an explosion in his laboratory put an emphatic end to his efforts. Now, in a Defense News article, the details of this fusion technology emerge, along with Bussard's claims that a remarkably small amount of funding could finish the job and deliver a working fusion reactor decades ahead of competing efforts — a reactor that runs on Boron and produces electricity directly — without radiation."
