Comment Diva or not, you need two out of three things... (Score 1) 356

There are three things that people really care about in an employee, quality work, meeting deadlines, and a pleasant attitude - and you only really need two out of those three. If you do good work and it's on time people will put up with how unpleasant you are, if your work is good and you're easy to get along with people will put up with missed deadlines, if you're on time and always a pleasure to be around people will put up with work that's not as good as everyone else. Ideally you want to shoot for three out of three, but sometimes you have to settle for less.

You know, because, as long as you have a "secure network" it's ok to have remote power shut off spanning an area as big as southern california, amiright? Who would want to (or even be clever enough) to hack a system like that?

How Facebook Built Natural Language Into Graph Search 39

Nerval's Lobster writes "Facebook's Graph Search is an ambitious project: give users the ability to search through the social network's vast webs of data via natural-language queries. But that's much easier said—so to speak—than done. Although human beings think nothing of speaking in 'natural' language, a machine must not only learn all the grammatical building-blocks we take for granted—it needs to compensate for the quirks and errors that inevitably pop up in the course of speech. The Facebook team tasked with building Graph Search also knew that the alternate option, keyword-based search, wasn't a viable one. 'Keywords, which usually consist of nouns or proper nouns, can be nebulous in their intent,' Facebook engineering manager Xiao Li wrote in an April 29 posting on Facebook's blog. 'For example, "friends Facebook" can mean "friends on Facebook," "friends who work at Facebook Inc," or "friends who like Facebook the page."' That left the team with building a natural-language interface. The posting digs deep into the elements of the backend, including everything from 'parse trees' to a lexical analysis system."

This is such bullshit. Women *were* the first programmers b/c it was a natural transition from touch typing to writing code. You know, women like the one who created the Liskoff Substitution Principle!? You know, Barbara Liskoff? Women were some of the most significant innovators in the field!

The reason women aren't in programming anymore is because there was a massive campaign to make programming a male dominated profession in the 60's and it's just stuck since then. It's a shame that you have such a bigoted, short signed, idiotic attitude about women. ( ...or even intense thinking? what the fuck is wrong with you and the idiots that modded you up as "insightful"?)

Why is it that with only 4 posts up (when I wrote this) I'm already pissed off? I guess I already know just how-many-stupid-things are about to be written here, and 'resigning to it in silent fury... Debating climate deniers is like getting a beer with a bunch of birthers (literally). Science has an amazing way of reinforcing crazy stupid by presenting contradicting, independently verifiable facts, sometimes it's too painful to watch.
