The iPhone Serial Port Hack 217

An anonymous reader writes "The iPhone's little known secret, a hidden serial port, is revealed. 'The real benefit in all of this is that there are so many console packages for iPhone in Cydia now that you can have a fully functional computer, as useful as a Linux box, but without carrying around a laptop.'"

Hollywood Stock Exchange Set To Launch In April 100

You can buy and sell actor or movie "stock" for virtual cash on the website Hollywood Stock Exchange (HSX). Starting in April the company plans on letting you turn those movie performance predictions into real dollars. HSX filed with the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission for approval as an active trading site in November 2008 and has just entered the final phase of regulatory review. Richard Jaycobs, president of HSX's parent company, said, "The number of people who visit movie theaters each year and form opinions about a film's success is in the tens of millions. We believe that's the reason the public response to this product has been very positive."

Left 4 Dead 2 Approved In Australia After Edits 134

Last month we discussed news that Valve's upcoming shooter Left 4 Dead 2 had been denied classification in Australia, which meant the game could not be legally sold there. Now, after a series of edits which removed "considerable amounts of gore from gameplay," Australia's classification board has given the game an MA15+ rating. Their new report (PDF) says, "No wound detail is shown and the implicitly dead bodies and blood splatter disappear as they touch the ground. ... The board notes that the game no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment." The unmodified version of the game may still be approved, pending a review that concludes on October 22nd.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the headline was Descent: Freespace 2. Few games have ever drawn me into the story like Freespace and made me feel like I was really out there in space were anything could happen and there was little to protect me. I loved almost every minute of it.

I tried on a pair of these on at CES in January. The booth was a joint with NVidia to show off their 3D tech, and TI to show off the refresh rates of DLP. We sat and watch a long clip of a movie and an extended scene from madden 08. I don't remember any of us in the group feeling sick or disoriented after. And over all I was really impressed with the quality of the illusion, as well as the ease of the implementation
