Journal Journal: ahhh 1

i have not been here in a long time, and rarely skim the headlines that come in my email box...and yet...whatever headline it was that drew me here I have forgotten to the forest of slashdotness I once recalled. I like hanging with the nerds here though most of them think they are cool for being agnostic, as if that was a cool intellectual rebellious thing to do. As if magick isn't merely the spaces that science can't yet define....such as the power of a rose upon the psyche...we can descri

GM Researching Windshields For Old Drivers 362

beuges writes "General Motors researchers are working on a high-tech windshield that users lasers and infra-red sensors to identify and enhance important objects for older drivers with vision problems. 'For example, during a foggy drive, a laser projects a blue line onto the windshield that follows the edge of the road. Or if infrared sensors detect a person or animal in the driver's path during a night drive, its outline is projected on the windshield to highlight its location.' And it's not only older drivers who will benefit: 'Some features would be helpful to drivers of all ages. If a driver is speeding, a pink box frames an approaching speed limit sign to draw the driver's attention.' The 65 and older population in the US will nearly double in about 20 years, meaning more people will be struggling to see the road like they used to."

Duke Nukem Forever Preview On Jace Hall Show 341

An anonymous reader writes "The Jace Hall Show launched today on Sony's Crackle with a real gameplay preview of Duke Nukem Forever. Jace Hall is a former video game producer and Warner Bros exec and apparently this is his foray into online celebrity. DNF is 12 years in development ... it might be real after all." And if you have had enough self-indulgent gaming-news patter, another reader says "If you want to simply skip right ahead, it's about 4:20 in."

Submission + - Component Video Preferred Over HDMI For Installers (cepro.com)

An anonymous reader writes: HDMI has had a lot of backlash, from its content protection schemes to the different versions and variations. So much so that most custom installers prefer using component video cabling instead of HDMI for everything, citing "that is works" among the reasons why. Will HDMI ever fulfill the promise it was sold on?
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Slashdot Article Is Self Referencing (slashdot.org)

QuantumG writes: "An article on Slashdot has been submitted which refers to itself. Scientists suggest such self-referential technology may soon be available commercially. The article is otherwise devoid of content and the link it contains might not work. Will future dupes of this article reference itself or a previous article? Only time will tell."

Submission + - No Slashdot April Fools Jokes in 2008 8

An anonymous reader writes: Slashdot will not be participating in the April Fools jokes this year due to a lawsuit that was settled out of court with undisclosed terms stemming from the 2007 April 1st stunts. The false stories were determined to be too egregious by a yet to be named individual. Slashdot's parent company SourceForge, Inc. found it wiser to settle out of court then a lengthy battle that was obviously going to span several months.

The ponies will be missed.

Submission + - OOXML bulldozed to a Yes in Norway (freecode.no)

An anonymous reader writes: This blogger recount what just happened in the Norwegian Standards process. The technical committee was steamrolled by pencil pushers. He points to the standards institute's possible selfish motives.

Submission + - Gibson sues Guitar Hero over patent (nytimes.com)

Izabael_DaJinn writes: ""Gibson Guitar sues MTV Networks and Harmonix, units of Viacom Inc., as well as Electronic Arts, relating to the wildly popular Guitar Hero video games." from The NY Times.

So Gibson Guitar wants a bigger piece of the $1 billion dollar Guitar Hero pie, so it has come up with what looks like the typical sort of patent nonsense you usually see here on /. But I'll let you guys tell me."

Saudi Arabia Bans Roses 3

Saudi Arabia's religious police are seeing red over red roses. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has ordered the removal from stores any items colored scarlet, which is widely seen as symbolizing love. It is not unusual for the Saudi vice squad to become stricter before Valentine's Day, which it sees as encouraging relations between men and women outside of wedlock. Saudi officials said they are studying the effects of other things that fuel lust, like being awake, the vibrations of a heavy truck driving close by and the cute cashier at the gas station.

It seems the Nigerian spammers have learned you can't always kill them with kindness. Now they just threaten to kill you. A woman in St. Louis received a mail that said, in part, "Am very sorry for you my friend, is a pity that this is how your life is going to end as soon as you don't comply. ... I don't have any business with you, my duty as I am mailing you now is just to KILL/ASSASINATE you and I have to do it as I have already been paid for that. Get back to me now if you are ready to pay some fees to spare your life, If you are not ready for my help, then I will carry on with my job straight-up."
