Comment Say goodbye to lobsters (Score 1) 84

They stop eating when the water temp goes over 14C, and never get big enough to be legally catchable, nor big enough to breed.

When my Dad was young, Loch Laxford in north-west Scotland supported 14 boats fishing for lobsters (thus 14 families). When I visited in the 1990s, there was one boat getting half an income out of fishing for lobsters.

Subtle problem.

The sea is a really, really harsh environment. Getting any power generation device to work reliably, and last long enough to pay for itself, is one sumbitch of an uphill struggle.

The tidal flow plants in Scotland have been developing for twenty years now, which is why it is HILARIOUS that USA has suddenly discovered the ocean.

Bah humbug.

...especially NOT medical insurance companies.

In several decades of IT consulting, I have repeatedly encountered insurance companies where everyone was an entitled, self-satisfied, arrogant prick who believed that their IT was perfect, that they knew everything, and they could not be told about the gaps in their knowledge; and they believed everyone they met had to jump to satisfy their every demand. And it always turned out that the individual involved did not have the authority to decide anything.

Best policy: leave them to rot in their own juice.

Comment IBM was like this ... (Score 1) 126

Late 80s, early 90s. Just before the brown stuff hit the rotating air mover.

The exact same four aspects: mission statements composed of sunshine and kittens, complacency ("No-one ever got fired for buying IBM"), delusions of exceptionalism (Token Ring was theoretically great, but the IBM-designed hardware stank, and they refused to release the IP so someone competent could have a go - they lost the whole networking space), too many middle managers, too many VPs.

But they did one thing right - when they made me redundant, the payout was excellent.

Comment Actual experience of a Chinese EV (Score 1) 146

I test-drove an MG 4 a couple of weeks ago.

Excellent car, better than I expected, 250 mile range, half the price of a Tesla, delivery time 8 weeks. None of the Western legacy auto makers can make a car that good, at that price, in that volume.

I would have placed an order, except the Missus said to wait for the MG 5 in a few weeks, because we need a bigger vehicle than the MG 4.

Pro tip: the MG 5 is barely more expensive than the MG 4. In other words, really excellent value for money.
