Comment Re:Give me Laser Toner any day of the week (Score 1) 651

Well mind you, I had my first inkjet in 1997, it was an epson stylus color iis (without the color package) and it covered all my printing needs up until when I had to replace my computer with one without an LTP port, here is why:

-cartridges were HUGE, at least for today standards, one could print more than 500 pages
-The printing head came separated from the cartridge, alternative cartridges where about 4 dollars.
-Bulk ink!! a syringe, a lil mess and 500 pages more for about a dollar!

I replaced it with a canon which gets the bulk ink treatment too, however the cartridge is to small, the printing head is too easy to clog and the color cartridge is a joke. I still print cheaply but the mess is not worth it anymore. Looking for a laser now.

Calc:

Books!, get some good ones and read all theory, solve every example, do as much problems as you can and you shall pass. Particular suggestions? well I used stewart's calculus for theory, I am sure that there are better ones but it did the trick (for multivariable calc I prefer Espinoza Ramo's analysis vectorial dont know if it is available in english), those two will explain the theory quite well, try to do every doable proof for the identities you might have to use, it will help you remember them and and understand what they are about.

Buy them used, you can find the for less than a cup of good coffee, most books dont change that much from edition to edition, dont be afraid to buy a book more than five years old, get the compendium, at least with stewart's calculus you can get a book which includes single and multivariable calculus or two with each topic.

Lectures!, there are plenty of online lectures from many universities available online, I really enjoyed the mit ones available at mitocw and academicearth.org there are also lectures from berkley, I first red the book then listen to the lectures, with the mit ones there is even material such as examples and exercises available (at mitocw)

Practice!, as much as you can, concepts are sometimes easy to gasp, examples easy to solve, but many problems require certain math skill which you can only get by practicing, for this I recommend a series of books: Schaum's outlines, they are available for almost any course and provide an extensive array of solved problems to help you get the skill, dont look at them! solve them, and just when you are stuck look at the book. practice practice practice! (these books also come with a theory but sometimes too resumed and dificult to get without a proper background)

Stat:

Currently taking the course with university provided material, cant really help you that much, google a bit and I am sure that you will get some good book recommendations and adequate video lectures, there are also shaum's outlines for statistics, in this case I have found the thery available on the outlines to suffice.

Ps: you can get the books really cheap at betterworlsbooks.com dont bother with the last editions, an old book in good condition will be much cheaper and almost as good as the latest one.

I am fairly certain that Amazon also sold fake ipod usb adapters, the new small ones, I got two of those from ebay and they were a fairly good fake (knew before buying, after all they were 3 usd including shipping), except that all of them had the same serial number and a misspelled "desgn by apple in california".

Read again please, I am not ignoring the fact that the computer is compromised, instead I am embracing it, If you used online banking systems as the ones I am used to, you will see how difficult is to actually take control of a computer and do all the required steps to make a succesfull operation without the user noticing that his mouse is moving doing things on his own clicking links and all, in fact all cash sensitive operations require the use of the token, thus making a succesful fraudulent transaction a nearly imposible task.

Now, let me give you a real example using my bank's (banco de credito del peru) online system as a reference, lets say that I want to pay my college bill, this are the steps necesary:

-enter the kind of card and the last eight digits.

-enter your online banking password using V keypad(can only be changed using the ATM).

-enter your token.

-select operation.

-wait for the token to change.

-enter token using virtual keypad.

-confirm operation.

-repeat last four steps if necessary.

For added security they make you change the background color and upload a random picture wich is displayed everytime you log in, this is a meassure to fight masive scamms.

You are also constantly nagged to check ssl certificates, not only on the same web page but by phone, mail, tv ads and in the bank's waiting room, it gets anoying but it seems to be working.

Of course, you might argue that if someone is in total control of your pc he could as well fake a personalized web interface, lure you to make aparent valid transaction, record your token and use it in the 30 seconds he has, fine that can happen, but this is not perfect, he would have to fake the ssl certificate (?), monitor constantly the pc until the user decides to use the banking system and act almost simultaneously. How difficult would it be? I mean, seriously.

Ohh and I forgot, unless the operation is not in your "frequent operations" you cannot trasfer more than 300 dollars or 900 pen, how do you make them "frequent"? you have to use the atm.

See? creating a secure system is possible, there is no thing as completely secure but it so far the system seems to be secure enough, If I were a scammer I wouldnt bother with BCP clients, I would go paypal or bank of america.

No... if its a propper two factor authentication (password + token) it wouldnt matter, the token changes every 30 seconds or so.

Even if the hacker could see in real time what you are doing, logging every keystroke and having a live video feed of your pc (tokens are entered on a virtual keypad which change everytime) it simply wouldnt matter, by the time you log out your token would have changed at least a couple of times, rendering the obtained token unusable. And at least in my bank, you cannot have two sessions open simultaneously... sooo... it really works! arent we fkn clever?

I guess all this comes with a cost: rushed products that feel "beta", not enough testing, half baked solutions *ehem*itunes*ehem* and such. Seeing how palm has been doing I am sure that this issues will be fixed but mean time the user has to suffer and thats BAD.
