Comment Error bars (Score 2, Insightful) 264

Where are the error bars?

I had a college teacher in one of the experimental courses who figuratively ran over me and some of my fellow students' reports for plotting graphs of measured quantities without error bars, particularly when there's a "curve fit" on it. The idea is to figure out how close/far from the "expected behavior" are the experimental point. From then on I've always paid attention to it. At least some reference to it in the preprint would be nice. For all we know, those microvolt output voltages could have errors as big as the graph scale.

Does anyone know if/what software is used to isolate the "relevant" footage? If you just plug in a camera in place of the telescope's ocular and let it record to the 'puter, you'll have to spend literally thousands of hours of recording (and that's being generous) before actually picking up something interesting/unusual.

How about Microsoft releasing IE6 source code after it lets it die out, so interested users can go about patching it where possible (if they're so inclined)? If M$ refuses to provide assistance to IE6, it basically renounces to income related to it. Nevertheless, I expect them to deny it, because a source of revenue would be the "support" for the upgrade.

Submission + - JBoss security incident (jboss.org)

jbatista writes: The JBoss community announced on April 19th that their free Atlassian JIRA instance was targeted by a supposedly previously unknown XSS attack, "which allowed administrative access to the JIRA instance on April 11th, 2010, and subsequently user credentials from a backend database, containing passwords hashed without a random salt." Further details are provided in their announcement. In the meantime, jboss.org account owners (forums, etc.) should be receiving PGP-signed emails providing two links, one for the announcement (the first one leads to an inexistent page, so see the link above) and one for the lost password page in order to change their account password.

Comment Not just unemployment (Score 2, Insightful) 276

I'd like to see this much dedication in governments to other, more serious, forms of violence such as hunger, desease, poverty and (there I say it!?) corruption and unemployment. Yes, I realize banning unemployment is futile (some people are incompetent) but I consider it a vile form of violence against 40-something people when they're too old for employment but too young for retirement. But if they can get it right with some little things, maybe they can figure out how to get it right with bigger, more important things; but that is just a silly dream of mine.

OK, I have an idea for an article. "Experiments on Seduction: Why 'Just Be Yourself' Is a Bad Idea. Personal Recounts and Anedoctes." Abstract: Friends and relatives often dispense wisdom on the subject of seduction of members of the opposite sex by stating "Just be yourself". In this paper we provide evidence for the failure of this conventional wisdom and provide alternate explanations to its failure. Who wants to co-author?

You're bound to make enemies at some point, simply because not everyone has that high-standard work ethics. All it takes is one day when someone is feeling like s*** (because everyone else has a girlfriend, because he didn't get the raise, whatver) and you come up to him and point out how he should do his work better, and you've created a grudging enemy. The "be productive, work hard, listen to others" advice is good because it tends to create allies, not because it tends to avoid creating enemies.
