Correlation Found Between Brain Structure and Video Game Success 110

kghapa writes "Still want to argue that video games shrink your brain? While video games have been previously shown to stimulate brain activity and improve coordination skills, a recently published study has directly linked structures in the human brain with video game aptitude. And yes, apparently size does matter in this case. Quoting: '... each subject received 20 hours of training to play a video game specifically created for research purposes, called Space Fortress. It's basically an Asteroids-type arcade game, in which the object is to knock down and destroy an enemy fortress while dodging space mines. However, the game has lots of extra twists that require close attention. Some of the players were told to focus exclusively on running up a high score, while others were told to shift their priorities between several goals. The result? The subjects who had more volume in an area called the nucleus accumbens did significantly better in the early stages of training. Meanwhile, those who were well-endowed in different areas of the striatum, known as the caudate nucleus and putamen, handled the shifting strategies better.'"

Canadian Blood Services Promotes Pseudoscience 219

trianglecat writes "The not-for-profit agency Canadian Blood Services has a section of their website based on the Japanese cultural belief of ketsueki-gata, which claims that a person's blood group determines or predicts their personality type. Disappointing for a self-proclaimed 'science-based' organization. The Ottawa Skeptics, based in the nation's capital, appear to be taking some action."

Windows 7 Share Grows At XP's Expense 412

CWmike writes "Microsoft's Windows ran to stay in place last month as Window 7's market share gains made up for the largest-ever declines in Windows XP and Vista, data released today by Web metrics firm Net Applications showed. By these numbers, Windows 7's gains were primarily at the expense of Windows XP. For each copy of Vista replaced by Windows 7 during November, more than six copies of XP were swapped out. Meanwhile, Apple's Mac OS X lost share during November... betcha Ballmer is having an extra giddy time with that news. Linux came up a winner last month, returning to the 1% share mark for the first time since July. Linux's all-time high in Net Applications' rankings was May 2009, when it nearly reached 1.2%."

Dragon Age: Origins To Get Paid DLC Expansion — On Launch Day 241

BioWare's upcoming RPG, Dragon Age: Origins, is set to launch on November 3rd. Today they announced details about some of the downloadable content they have planned for the game. In fact, it's scheduled to become available on the same day the game launches, at a cost of $7. (The PS3 version will be slightly delayed). "Called the Warden's Keep, the DLC will add a dungeon-based quest to the game along with six new abilities, a variety of items, and a base where players can trade with merchants. It will feature a supernatural storyline set in an ancient — and possibly haunted — fortress once used as a redoubt by the Grey Wardens, the ancient order at the center of Origins' main storyline." There will be two additional bits of DLC that are available for free to people who have purchased the game new. One "adds a stone golem character to the player's party from the beginning of the game, unlocking numerous story options," and the other increases a character's defense against some attacks in-game.

Anarchy Online is still going, Tabula Rasa is dead. I beg to differ that Anarchy Online is worse. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Of course, Anarchy Online looks quite a bit dated, but then again, there are a few things more important than graphics. Like beer. And hookers. And cocaine.

Honestly, I take very little stock in these bullshit personality tests at work. I typically have made up my mind to hire you or not in less than a minute after I started talking with you. Some of my best and most reliable employees are homeless scumbags that I let take showers in the chemical sink when we are closed, and some of my worst employees, and the ones that I fire the most, are 'normal' people who would have scored well on the test.

So how about going with fines instead of taxes. Traffic offences penalties, should be charged as a percentage of annual income so that all people, including visitors, pay a penalty that reflects equal suffering and that is specifically being used to manipulate behaviour. Some really nice big fines for the rich and greedy. A lot of the current penalties represent a fairly large percentage of the minimum wage and using those percentages as a basis, people earning more than $100,000 per year will end up paying fines in the tens of thousands of dollars. So double benefit, taxation income shortfall fulfilled and the wealthy finally are being motivated to adhere to the law upon the same 'in reality' basis as the poor.

Actually, if I am not mistaken, Germany or some other northern European countries actually have had a system like that. I was reading somewhere about some rich guy getting a $20,000.00 speeding ticket because he had a multimillion dollar income. Not sure what the country is, though.
