It didn't fail, it worked perfectly for five years. Surgery adjusts the current state of the eyes, but your eyes may continue changing the same way your body does during your lifetime. That is why it's recommended that your vision has been stable - that is, you have had the same set of glasses without your vision getting worse - for at least two years. Normally, vision degradation over time follows an S-curve and flattens out after a couple of years. Only then does it make sense to consider laser eye surgery.

Imagine a body builder getting a tattoo on his chest. Then he stops training, muscles turns into fat and the tattoo starts looking like nothing at all. Did the tattoo "fail"? Your friend seems to have picked an appropriate time, but his body changed. One just needs to be aware of that, you can't put the blame on the surgery.

Submission + - Sony Hints At Compensation for PSN Hack (itworld.com)

itwbennett writes: "In the latest of a series of blog posts, Sony said it is 'evaluating ways to show appreciation' to users affected by the PlayStation Network outage, now in its 8th day. The PlayStation Network is offered at no charge to users, so compensation is unlikely to be monetary. A subset of users do subscribe to the PlayStation Plus service, which offers access to beta versions of games and other perks for an annual fee. The blog post also said subscribers to Sony Online Entertainment's MMO games 'DC Universe Online' and 'Free Realms' would also see something from the company."

Submission + - Radio Controlled Car Runs on Soda Can Rings (engadget.com)

polyp2000 writes: A pair of Spanish engineers have recently unveiled the dAlH2Orean (see what they did there?), a R/C car that runs on aluminum. Dropping a few soda can tabs into a tank of sodium hydroxide produces enough hydrogen to power the little speedster for 40 minutes – at almost 20mph.

You're not supposed to position your head, keep your head "perfectly" in front of the 3DS (side movement will keep the directional light from hitting your respective eyes). You are however supposed to use the slider to adjust the 3D effect until you find the sweet spot.

but I suspect a lot of that power is going on the 3d and isn't actually available for games to use on straightforward visual quality.

Depends on how you look at it. The screen is 800 pixels wide, but for the 3D effect every other vertical line is directed at your respective eyes, making the resolution effectively 400 pixels wide. Other than the double horizontal width (which of course is quite far from negligible), the 3D effect doesn't need extra processing power. The hardware does the light redirecting, which is why you have a smooth slider for adjusting the 3D depth, or "intensity" if you prefer.

What MS really need to do is educate people - instead of an intimidating dialogue that says "DO YOU WANT TO ALLOW THIS YES | NO" there needs to be an explanation of the consequences.

If they don't care, they don't read it. For those people, any kind of message box is in the way of them getting to what they wanted to do and thus they click on YES just to get rid of the it.
