Comment Poorly researched letter (Score 4, Interesting) 69

This letter loses all credibility when in the first paragraph they refer to Marketplace as an NPR program. Marketplace is played on many NPR affiliated radio stations, but is actually produced and distributed by American Public Media (not to be confused with the TV program Marketplace from the Canadian Broadcasting Company). If the lawyers can't get simple things like that right, why would the reader be confident that they got complicated legal precedent right.

When non-technical users have problems with websites we maintain, they often can't tell us what browser they are using, but we can often find the user in our access logs and check the user agent to get some idea of how to reproduce the issue (or just give them instructions for how to update/install a new browser). Without UA strings, this helpdesk assistance won't work.

Thankfully, devices that require you to change the default code are becoming more common. Our brand new copy machines don't force you to change the admin password, but every time someone with admin rights logs in, the system reminds you that the default admin account still has the default password. In truth, even better are devices that don't have a default password at all, but make you set one the first time you connect them.

The real reason Caller ID spoofing is allowed is to allow people with multiple phone lines to show their main call-back number, show the direct dial number of someone who called instead of the main number, or for companies offering legitimate dialing service (for example, school closed for inclement weather calls) to show the number of their client.
