OK show us the shoes you donated for recycling. My guess is you donated 10 pair of barely used shoes instead of really worn out shoes. Who in their right mind would turn a great pair of shoes into a ground up rubber mat? Repair, reuse, repurpose is far better than recycle. Recycling costs the most energy and gets the least benefit. They should be applauding Dow and Singapore resellers for doing the right thing. Maybe Dow emphasised the wrong part of the process for un-reuseable shoes grinding and using in rubber mats. Instead of boasting about repair, reuse and repurpose which they should boast about.

It is much more important that people know how to handle money than program computers. Everyone must handle money. Their lives would be far better knowing about money and how to use it than how to program a computer. Not knowing how to handle money usually means you will not be able to afford a computer and internet connection. You might not even be able to feed yourself or your family. Money is just much more fundamental to life than computers.

Their not your "Man", "Woman", "Black", "Asian", "name your label" Friend they are your Friend. If your think about them any other way you have not eliminated that part of yourself that discriminates. They are a founder who is skilled in negotiation, blah, blah, blah.. and a Parent of 3. If you even mention race you are perpetuating racism. If you mention gender you are discriminating. The thing I absolutely hate the most is that race question on forms I am asked to fill out. If you want to eliminate racism make it illegal to put that question on the form. I usually answer Other - Human. Biological differences are important for medical reasons so asking about X or Y chromosome makes sense. So might other genetic traits that could affect treatment decisions. If you are describing someone skin color matters as much as hair color, height, weight etc. but not more. It is also more descriptive than saying someone is x. That leads to many bad outcomes. We can do better.

When we drive cross country we need to stop every hour to two hours to take a break and stretch our legs. Each stop is about 10 minutes. About every 3rd stop we top off the tank. Topping off the tank takes a few minutes more. If we could top up a battery at each stop then range would not be an issue. The real issue is availability. There are about 168,000 gas stations in the US. Each station has from 2 to 120 pumps (Bucee's). An average station has about 8 pumps so 1.3 million pumps. Charging stations are catching up. Their are about 25,000 charging stations with almost 80,000 outlets. The number of outlets and stations are still an order of magnitude away from being as convenient.

Where there are no roads there is no traffic. A more convenient route attracts more drivers. Lower priced property with a comparable commute time entices people to move. If you stopped development and built more roads it would improve traffic flow. This is not the way of the world. You build more roads then people will develop property along those roads. People want to live in homes with bigger yards. People want to live places that do not have urban outdoorsmen in the neighborhood. People do not like to ride busses or trains if they can avoid it. You have to try and open a door to see if its locked. Once you open the door and see stacks of cash and jewels sitting around is not the same as going in a post office lobby with lots and lots of secure lock boxes around.

Comment Labor costs (Score 5, Insightful) 135

The US has high labor costs. US companies automate many processes to eliminate labor costs. Automation cannot be reconfigured for a new product quickly or at low cost. In China they use people instead of machines because the labor cost is lower than automating. With a person all you have to do is show them how to do something different and away they go. With automation you have to figure out how to do the task automatically. Build a machine that does that and then spend weeks debugging and adjusting it so it does the job well. Tesla tried to automate too much and it hurt them. People are much more flexible than any automation system. If we could pay people less then we would use more people. We must pay more so we automate. Automation is not as easy to adapt to something new.
