Submission + - Microsoft & Novell win award for interoperabil (foxbusiness.com)

RedZed writes: "Here's a good slow news day story picked up from BusinessWire: Frost & Sullivan awarded Microsoft & Novell the Industry Innovation and Advancement Award for System Interoperability at its recently held '2007 India ICT Awards'. The award for Industry Innovation is presented each year to companies for broader, more comprehensive participation in the industry and contributions to the advancement of the market. This is the first time the award has been presented for interoperability. http://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/industries/finance/article/microsoft-novell-win-2007-frost-sullivan-industry-innovation-advancement-award_420288_9.html"

Submission + - MySQL's Threat to Commercial Databases (cnn.com)

eldavojohn writes: "The odds are high that you've heard of the most popular open source database, MySQL. Financial columnists like CNN/Fortune author David Kirkpatrick are starting to notice it too and recognize it as a serious threat to ... well, every other commercial database out there. Sun CEO Scott McNealy said "If you want to save money, make the default database MySQL. It's free ... if Yahoo and Google can run their entire operations on MySQL, then certainly there's a huge chunk of your operations that could run on it as well." With press like that and the performance to back it up, is MySQL going to ruin commercial databases created by Oracle, IBM & Microsoft?"

Submission + - Digital TV Burnout

mpthompson writes: According to Embedded.com beyond the robust growth, glitzy new high-end displays and marketing frenzy lurks the dirty little secret of HDTV: An unsettling number of sets are returned to the retail outlets where they are purchased. Consumers are often wowed by the performance of HDTVs displaying slow-moving, brightly colored video on the showroom floor, but are disappointed by the performance of the set when they get it home. There are many factors at play, but consumer confusion over jargon laden HDTV technology seems to be the major culprit. Manufacturers also blame the compression technologies used by cable and satellite providers to jam as many channels into their bandwidth as possible for consumer dissatisfaction. Is Joe Six-Pack really ready for digital TV?

And, as an extra added bonus, they're tossing in legal DVD-playback capability. In a word: "Neat!""

Submission + - Microsoft's influence on upcoming ISO vote? (groklaw.net) 2

christian.einfeldt writes: "Microsoft has experienced some criticism for its handling of its bid to have OOXML accepted as an ISO standard, including the use of financial incentives to affect the Swedish national vote, which resulted in Swedent reversing its pro-Microsoft position; and failing to honor a promise to relinquish control of the OOXML specification if it gained ISO status. Now, Groklaw has published an article that raises questions about Microsoft's influence on the upcoming February vote, citing concerns with the limitation of discussions of patent issues, public accountability of the process, and even irregularities with choosing the size of the room so as to limit the delegates opposed to OOXML ISO status, as had been done in the past."

Submission + - Original KDE3 vs. KDE4 Memory Comparison Debunked (jarzebski.pl)

An anonymous reader writes: The author of the original KDE 3.5 vs KDE 4.0 memory comparison, which indicated that KDE 4.0 used less memory than the KDE 3.5 series, has come out with a more accurate benchmark. In reality, KDE 4.0 uses 110 MB more memory than KDE 3.5.8. This was no surprise to many KDE developers, who saw many mistakes in the way the original results were obtained. However, given the new composite window manager, Plasma/Oxygen bling, and numerous new features, the extra memory consumption is probably well worth it!

Submission + - Dell: You cannot use MS Vol Lic. on Open Source PC (dell.com) 2

An anonymous reader writes: Dell says you can't use your existing Microsoft Volume Licensing on its line of Open Source notebook computers. They go on to say, "Customers interested in a Microsoft® Windows® solution should purchase a Dell notebook pre-loaded with Windows XP Professional."

What good is volume licensing if you have to buy a computer that already has a license?

Submission + - HP Laptops Ship with Gaping Security Hole (zdnet.com) 1

Small revenge writes: A zero-day flaw is several major HP laptop models could provide an easy way for hackers to take complete control of Windows machines, according to a warning from an independent security researcher. A successful attack simply requires that the laptop owner is lured to a malicious Web site while using Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The risks include remote code execution, remote system registry read/write access and remote shell command execution.

Got it Microsoft? Got it Jasow Matusow? Any misread acronym can make sensational headline."

Submission + - Freedb.org -- does anyone know what's going on? 1

tednolan writes: "The hosts behind the round-robin name freedb.freedb.org provide (provided?) a service to lookup information about music CDs based on a disc ID using a protocol called CDDBP. A number of programs use this information to generate filename and MP3 tag information when ripping CDs. I use cdda2wav (and some custom shell scripts) on FreeBSD.

For the past few days, freedb.freedb.org has stopped resolving disc ID requests. I have verified by searching USENET that this is happening for other people, and is not just an artifact of my configuration or ISP. Noone, however, seems to know what is going on.

The web server at www.freedb.org is still working, but there is no indication of any problem noted on their front page. There is a link for "forums", but if these were ever implemented, they are now gone. Searching slashdot doesn't bring up any recent hits for freedb.

Does anyone know what is going on with this service?"

Submission + - OpenISO.org Review of OOXML

nb writes: "Concerned about the implications of the intolerable and closed processes of Ecma and ISO/IEC and the obvious corruption of several national decision-making committees, one member of a national standardization body has decided to step out of the confines of the ISO/IEC process and launch OpenISO.org with a Call For Participation for creating a "problem report" document about OOXML that can help ISO/IEC national member bodies with evaluating whether the changes that will be decided at the OOXML "Ballot Resolution Meeting" (BRM) in February are sufficient to address OOXML's most serious problems. After the BRM, national ISO/IEC member bodies have the opportunity of changing their vote."
