In all of the examples you've cited, you're depriving a person of the actual physical property. Your analogy is flawed. 1) Shoplifting a couch deprives the store of property in the form of a sale that the store would have potentially made. For piracy to apply to this analogy, you would have to assume that the pirate would buy the software, when in fact he may only be getting it because it's there and free. 2) Again, you're depriving another person of this vehicle. For piracy to apply here, the pirate would have to steal the software off of someone's computer, and then delete it, and THEN seed the machine in such a way that it can never be put back onto the machine. 3 & 4) Now you're just comparing piracy to violent crime.

So basically, he's suing for 3 million dollars over 5 years because he's addicted to a video game? If he won, that would make him the first person to make $600,000 a year playing video games. At 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, that averages out to $288.46 cents an hour for playing Lineage 2. Most of us will never make that sort of money doing anything, let alone for playing an MMO.

To be fair, I'm from the Lower Shore of Maryland. No one cares what the Lower Shore thinks. To illustrate that, one time during the late 80s, early 90s, the Governor at the time, Willie Don Schaffer, referred to the Lower Shore as a "****house." The Lower Shore was outraged, the rest of the state apparently agreed, because he got re-elected.

Yeah, but the video is muted until the unmarked car pulls up. If you look closely behind the motorcyclist, you can clearly see two marked police cars with their sirens on, also responding to the stop. It's pretty obvious that the video was muted because the guy was fleeing and eluding. You don't just wind up with two marked and one unmarked troopers on you all at once. Either way, though, it's still bullcrap that they're prosecuting him for filming the officer. Hell, we have TV shows that consist almost completely of officers' dashboard cams filming suspects. But when the shoe's on the other foot...

Comment No mention of Chrome's best feature? (Score 3, Interesting) 570

The only thing--- and I mean ONLY thing--- I prefer about Chrome is its task manager. If a website's terrible code / flash movie / javascript is dragging my system to its knees, Chrome lets me shut down just that single swf. This is a terrific idea. However, on the balance, Firefox has far more user support, compatibility, and security.

Comment This was neither an accident, nor a suicide. (Score 1) 1343

"Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan of Norene, Tenn., shot herself Sunday night after her stepfather left his loaded Smith & Wesson handgun out on a table, Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe said." I think I see where this story went wrong. Seriously, this isn't an accident--- it is a completely avoidable death. What kind of idiot leaves out loaded handguns with children in the house? I hope this guy rots in prison. Further, it wasn't a suicide--- it wasn't the child's attempt to kill herself. Finally, this story has about as much to do with the Wii as it does an NES. How much Wii-shooting can a three-year-old possibly do? I don't think the Wii had anything to do with it--- the kid saw what she thought was a toy, played with it, and now her father's the poster boy for redneck idiots. The connection between "Wii" and "child playing with loaded handgun" is so short that it shouldn't even be news.

Comment Buying used games (Score 1) 461

What Sony forgets is that the majority of games that I buy used are stuff that I would never--- EVER--- have bought new. I paid like $3 for a copy of Disaster Report for the PS2. Would I have paid $20 for that? Hell no. The benefit you get from buying a game new as opposed to used are that it'll be in perfect condition, and you'll be one of the first people to be playing it. If you want it used--- and cheap--- you're going to be waiting 6 months to a year. (I'm not talking the difference between getting a game for $40 at GameStop as opposed to $50 brand new)
