Comment Manly? (Score 5, Insightful) 993

Huxley: "An intellectual is a person who has discovered something more interesting than sex." Being "manly" in the sense I get from the summary is something only troglodytes admire. I would find more pressing things to stress over. And no, I don't have a sense of humor, so bugger off.

Thanks again. I am too inexperienced to jump ship now (I don't have a degree or any years under the belt) so I am holding tight. But, at night, I tell myself that five years as a (good) QA Manager is worth more on paper than a CS degree and that makes up for the petty reimbursement and obscene IP contracts. Regardless, I'll try to make use of your hindsight. Best regards.

Thanks for the insight. I'll thicken the plot for you a bit:

The smiles and beers are genuine. The boss is a good guy. The problem with that is that he leverages how he is a good guy and how the company is a good org to balance out the fact that I get peanuts for pay (The client I am contracted out to pays my company over twice what I see and we charge half what the client pays internals [found that out while chatting during an on-site], so you can estimate how little I make). The big question then, for me, especially after thinking about your suggestions, is whether I rather work for little monetary reimbursement for a "good" company and get a piece of mind or play the game in an evil corporate situation and actually afford to have a family some day. Regardless, I'm holding on to my job like it's my skin due to the nation wide layoffs.

Submission + - Who owns my thoughts? 4

Jangchub writes: I recently received an invite to participate in the QuakeLive beta (I had signed up a while ago and had forgotten about it) and was excited because not only do I love games but I am also employed in software QA. So, I though it would be great for both parties as I would get my boom-headshot on and I could file intelligible bug reports and so on.

The rub occurred when I mentioned it to my co-worker and she recommended that I talk to the boss about it as it may violate my contract. Now, this didn't even cross my mind; The president and I are on beer-at-the-bar terms and I never though about things in this way this deeply.

The WTF moment came when I had a standing talk about this and my employer said something along the lines of "Since you are salaried, any idea you come up with on your free time that relates to our field of work we own". Now, this is a little dark side of the Force for me. The methodologies I am learning in my industry will become part of my standard approach to software and life in general; how far does my employers rights intrude upon my ideas? Does he really own my every thought? And most importantly, any good books or websites for me to start educating myself in this area so that if I do have an eureka moment, I can own that idea myself?

I have developed a mirrored left to right script when I write in my journal. It has some benefits:

No smearing of ink.
Wife can't read fantasies about HR girl.
Looks totally bad-ass like elvish.

I can write it about 2/3ds fast as standard right to left printing and read it about 1/5th speed (it's not just mirrored English characters: I use a substitution alphabet (I bet developing this 'skill' is doing all sorts of cool stuff to my brain).

PS: To my second grade teacher that wanted to force me to be right handed: How about these apples you tool!

Submission + - Censorship of Police Brutality...again.

Jangchub writes: Youtube has been asked and has complied (though you can still find videos popping up) to remove a video of blatant police brutality from it's servers. Here is a link of the video, if it's still there, and Here is a link to some media coverage. I'm sure it's floating around elsewhere. It seems to me that David Snyder has a bad relationship with his fellow locals, especially police officer Jack Tiller, in Roseland, IN. What is obvious from the actual video is that a disagreement between two persons escalates when one party is ejected from the forum. What follows is actually quite disturbing, in that you can hear people saying things like "Did you trip and fall?" when it's obvious the guy was shoved out the door and given a few opinions from the Officer, with fist. Toward the end of the video you get the impression that this is a family affair. I'm going to end here before my personal commentary gets me into trouble.
