Comment Re:Games are the G in Allegro (Score 1) 167

I never suggested Allegro wasn't for games, I was just pointing out that audio in Linux gaming isn't as much of a mess as you suggest.

Most (all?) of the ports Loki did for Linux used SDL. Quake and Doom on Linux use OpenAL, which means that any of the games based on those engines also use OpenAL (eg. Tremulous, Urban Terror).

I'm curious if Allegro sound is just broken under Ubuntu or if it's universally a PulseAudio thing? Seems like they have more problems with Pulse than anyone else...

But since the introduction of PulseAudio, sound in Linux games has been a cluster[intercourse].

Most Linux games use SDL or OpenAL, not Allegro.

A little Googling seems to suggest that the Allegro issues can be fixed by using OSS as a backend instead of Alsa.

I'm honestly curious as a games programmer why someone would choose not to use a cross-platform API specifically designed for games (eg. OpenAL).

India's $35 Tablet Computer 294

NotBornYesterday was one of many readers sending in news that the Indian government has announced it is helping to develop a $35 tablet computer running Linux. "India has unveiled the prototype of a $35 basic touchscreen tablet aimed at students, which it hopes to bring into production by 2011. The government plans to subsidize the tablets so the cost to students could be $20; and eventually, they hope the cost will fall to $10 per unit. India's human resource development minister, Kapil Sibal, says, 'The motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything.' Using a memory card instead of a hard drive, and running a Linux OS, the designers have managed to keep the price low, and are now looking for manufacturing partners. The tablet can be used for functions like word processing, Web browsing, and video conferencing. It has a solar power option too, which is important in India's less developed areas, though that add-on costs extra."

Facebook User Satisfaction Is 'Abysmal' 289

adeelarshad82 writes "American Customer Satisfaction Index recently conducted a survey in which they found that even though Facebook is gaining popularity, they are doing a miserable job of keeping their users satisfied. According to the survey Facebook scored 64 out of 100 for customer satisfaction, which puts the website in line with the satisfaction rates for airlines and cable companies. The survey also includes other websites like YouTube and Wikipedia (which scored considerably higher) and MySpace, which came in slightly lower. (The survey did not include Twitter since many of its members access the site through third-party sites rather than Twitter.com.) The ACSI was founded at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, and is based on annual interviews with about 70,000 customers. The group has measured portals and search engines in the past, as well as news and information websites, but this is the first year the ACSI included social networking sites." UM professor Claes Fornell blogged: "Controversies over privacy issues, frequent changes to user interfaces, and increasing commercialization have positioned the big social networking sites at satisfaction levels well below other Web sites..."

That's not much of an excuse. I have Yahoo! mail and Hotmail accounts, and I tied them into my Gmail. Now I only have to check one account, and I can send emails out through my old addresses from the Gmail interface. It's not very difficult to setup either (Settings -> Accounts and Import).

You get all the benefits of Gmail (lots of storage, excellent spam filtering) but you can keep using your old addresses. :)

As much as they'd like to I don't think they can afford to force everyone to upgrade to the newest model to play games, and convincing developers to make two different versions (one for the original 360 and one for the new S console) seems unlikely. Instead this seems to be a similar case as to what Sony did with the PS2.
