They call out some of the best games released in the Windows XP era, to mark the passing into the 'next generation' of PC gaming this past week. Some favorites include Call of Duty, Unreal Tournament 2004, Civilization IV, World of Warcraft and other titles that helped shape the era." Any titles you see missing from the list? The XP years were truly great, as far as PC titles went; how long do you think it will be before Vista has enough market penetration to make a difference in gaming?

Buzzsaw5 writes: Looks like anti video game activist and jackleg lawyer Jack Thompson's unscrupulous actions in his crusade to bring down Take-Two (publisher of the Grand Theft Auto game series), and anyone who disagrees with him, may have finally caught up to him. As reported at GamePolitics, Thompson "faces a disciplinary hearing before a referee appointed by the Florida Supreme Court. The pending judicial review follows a recent recommendation by the Florida Bar that five counts of professional misconduct against Thompson should proceed to the state's high court for action. If the charges are eventually upheld, Thompson could face disciplinary action up to and including disbarment." Thompson has assured GP that the Florida bar is in more trouble than he is (presumably for daring to sully his prophetic image). The sad thing is that regardless of the beat down he's facing, clueless and/or sensationalist media outlets and activists will continue to give credence to Jack Thompson's inanity, slander and outright lies. Don't expect Thompson to go down without a fierce fight, as he will do anything to remain relevant.

kulakovich writes: "One of the founders of the L5 Society, Cryonics advocate, and well known anti-Scientology activist Keith Henson, was taken into custody yesterday in Arizona, on an outstanding warrant for picketing a Scientology office back in 2001. There is much concern over his current condition at this time due to medication requirements as well as fear for his well-being. He and his family had been receiving death-threats prior to the arrest. The Extropy Institute immediately set up a Henson Legal Defense Fund on his behalf. Henson is also known for his work with the US Congress on Lunar policy in the early 80s."

Submission + - New Source Code Engine, All The Code, Launched

codemonkey69 writes: Both newsforge and jaxmagazine are covering the launch of a new source code search engine, All The Code. The big difference between this engine and previous generations is the ranking algorithm takes into consideration how code is used. The example newsforge gives is if there were two similar classes both for binary trees, if one class was used more frequently it would have a higher ranking than the less used class. While the engine only supports Java right now, the faq indicates they will be adding more languages soon. I wonder if the other source code search engines will start to use this to help them rank results?

An anonymous reader writes: As everyone who uses Netflix knows, scratches on DVD are frustrating and create significant customer support costs. Blu-ray is the first major disc format to address the problem. The chemistry [1] [2] [3] behind these coatings a radical-curing urethane(meth)acrylate and a curing monomer, and is applied unformly over the disc. The results are impressive — this video shows a Blu-ray disc surviving steel wool and a pizza cutter, which would have destroyed traditionally-coated formats (e.g., CDs, DVD, or HD-DVD). Fewer scratched discs also means less waste.

Those Aqua Teen Hunger Force signs that brought Boston to a halt earlier this week are now setting off copyright alarms on eBay. It's strange because the signs being auctioned are apparently authentic. Which means they aren't copies, and as a result are not in violation of copyright. Could it be that someone just wants these signs to go away so they won't suffer any more embarrassment? Medialoper has the details in How To Copyright An Atomic Bomb."

El Tiante writes: "Microsoft has confirmed a fifth zero-day attack against Microsoft Office users, warning against opening Excel files that arrive unexpectedly, even if it comes from trusted sources. Although .xls files are currently being used to launch the attacks, users of other Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, etc.) are potentially at risk. Confirmed vulnerable: Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP, Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, and Microsoft Office 2004 v. X for Mac."

From the website: "After almost 10 years of development we finally release Crystal Space and Crystal Entity Layer 1.0!" Crytalspace has several sub-projects: A game engine called CEL, a scripting exstension for that game engine called Cellstart, and CrystalCore, a single-player FPS Demo-Game built to show off Crystalspaces features. Crystalspace is generally considered a modern and extremely powerfull 3D engine and allready is in use in commercial products.
