I agree with Woz. Nobody owns anything. Everything digitally is licensed. Even when you hold a physical copy in your hands it's on loan for 60$. You ever actually read a EULA? With the NSA spying on you on everything not only don't you own anything nothing is private anymore.. welcome to the new America! Welcome to the New World... I hope you enjoy your stay and by the way ignore that 4th amendment only the 2nd one kinda counts....

Comment What keeps me off Windows? Apple and Microsoft! (Score 1, Interesting) 1215

I always been a fan of many oses including windows. it just seems microsoft hasn't given me enough...fast enough and what they give me gets in my way. I love linux/unix/gnu/bsd/ect for a good many year since i was handed a copy of slackware 2.something and told this is the future of computing (in truth it was at the time) but it still a little geek for most of computing kind. Apple (current desktop) used to be called the "awful macintrash" but now that it has incorporated my love of *xin/bsd/ect's and a interface that honestly hasn't changed majorly over it's life. Intel based machines, power and sophistication, flexibility, open source-i-ness, has kept me from the windows side of computing for a while. I don't even like troubleshooting a windows machine anymore. If Microsoft would start from scratch and rebuild windows on a more secure level and ideals i would give it a shot. I would love to feel at home again in a Microsoft enviroment but they seem to make it impossible to find stuff, and keep a status flow. For me the removal of the start button was a prime example of what i don't like about windows and microsoft's enviroment changes... as long as i can remember the apple in the left hand corner has been a fixture in mac os since mac os.

I had this conversation with my mom. I granted her the first 6chapters of genesis were true then when to Cain killing Abel. Why did god mark him (whosoever may come across) and he walked east of Eden found a land called Nod and married someone and had kids. Where did all these people come from all of sudden? What was Caine wife's name? If its call Nod that means it has established borders to Eden. Who name it thusly?

A few years back I was the sole tech for a hair salon and the major problem with pos was tipping. Usi g quickbooks pos at the time was woefull inept at handling tips. We had to devise a work around for 2 years the. Was forced to purchase another 3 copies of the new version that handled tips. I had found an open source pos at the time (bananaPos I believe) that allowed tips had record keeping we needed but didn't work with our financial service providers tech. Comment Group speak-up method (Score 3, Informative) 1127

Ive worked in a NOC where we had 1 girl for the longest. She was considered "one of the guys." i'm openly gay and was treated as "one of the guys" the environment has a built in level of tolerance due to age group. If something hit too close a simple "hey too far" handle the situation. We all respected each others boundaries but also there was plenty of sexual banter of all types. Later when we got another female, due to respect to age and presentation, we toned it down but even after a while she was "one of the guys" sometimes the worse one (in a funny way). Everybody need to respect boundaries. And to also speak up to the group first before charging down to HR. I feel when "group speak-up" is leveraged it leads to a better team. Just my observation...

Submission + - Virus kills breast cancer cells in laboratory (psu.edu)

An anonymous reader writes: A nondisease-causing virus kills human breast cancer cells in the laboratory, creating opportunities for potential new cancer therapies, according to Penn State College of Medicine researchers who tested the virus on three different breast cancer types that represent the multiple stages of breast cancer development.

Adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2) is a virus that regularly infects humans but causes no disease. Past studies by the same researchers show that it promotes tumor cell death in cervical cancer cells infected with human papillomavirus. Researchers used an unaltered, naturally occurring version of AAV2 on human breast cancer cells.

Cells have multiple ways of dying. If damage occurs in a healthy cell, the cell turns on production and activation of specific proteins that allow the cell to commit suicide. However, in cancer cells these death pathways often are turned off, while the proteins that allow the cell to divide and multiply are stuck in the "on" position.

One way to fight cancer is to find ways to turn on these death pathways, which is what researchers believe is happening with the AAV2 virus.

In tissue culture dishes in the laboratory, 100 percent of the cancer cells are destroyed by the virus within seven days, with the majority of the cell death proteins activated on the fifth day. In another study, a fourth breast cancer derived cell line, which is the most aggressive, required three weeks to undergo cell death.

Submission + - Missouri Removes Teacher-Student Social Media Ban

bs0d3 writes: The law that would have banned teachers from friending students on twitter and facebook was overturned late Friday. Now that a preliminary injunction has been issued to block the law in question from going into effect, the Missouri House subsequently passed a similar, but separate, bill with a 139 to 2 vote that gives school districts the freedom to determine their own communications policies. The new bill, which would permanently block the previously one, now awaits Governor Nixon's approval. Free speech advocates admit it's good that the first bill is gone but point out that the next one isn't much better.

Robot Invented To Crawl Through Veins 99

Slatterz writes "Scientists from Israel's Technion University have unveiled a tiny robot, made using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology, purportedly able to crawl through a person's veins in order to diagnose and potentially treat artery blockage and cancer. The little robot — with a diameter of just one millimeter — has neither engine nor onboard controls, instead being propelled forward by a magnetic field wielded on it from outside the patient's body."

Passenger Avoids Delay By Fixing Plane Himself Screenshot-sm 178

It would be a shame if an engineer on a recent Thomas Cook Airlines flight doesn't get a complimentary first class upgrade every time he flies. The engineer was on flight TCX9641 when it was announced that the trip would be delayed eight hours, while a mechanic was flown in to fix a problem. Luckily for the other passengers, the engineer happened to work for Thomsonfly Airlines, which has a reciprocal maintenance agreement with Thomas Cook. After about 35 minutes the man fixed the problem and the flight was on its way. A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook said, "When they announced there was a technical problem he came forward and said who he was. We checked his licence and verified he was who he said he was, and he was able to fix the problem to avoid the delay. We are very grateful that he was on the flight that day."

If You Live By Free, You Will Die By Free 251

Hugh Pickens writes "Internet entrepreneur Mark Cuban writes that the problem with companies who have built their business around Free is that the more success you have in delivering free, the more expensive it is to stay at the top. '"They will be Facebook to your Myspace, or Myspace to your Friendster or Google to your Yahoo," writes Cuban. "Someone out there with a better idea will raise a bunch of money, give it away for free, build scale and charge less to reach the audience."' Cuban says that even Google, who lives and dies by free, knows that 'at some point your Black Swan competitor will appear and they will kick your ass' and that is exactly why Google invests in everything and anything they possibly can that they believe can create another business they can depend on in the future searching for the 'next big Google thing.' Cuban says that for any company that lives by Free, their best choice is to run the company as profitably as possible, focusing only on those things that generate revenue and put cash in the bank. '"When you succeed with Free, you are going to die by Free. Your best bet is to recognize where you are in your company's lifecycle and maximize your profits rather than try to extend your stay at the top," writes Cuban. "Like every company in the free space, your lifecycle has come to its conclusion. Don't fight it. Admit it. Profit from it."'"

iPhone 3GS Finally Hacked 376

Well, the inevitable hacking of Apple's latest flavor of iPhone has happened. Named "purplera1n," the tool will only allow installation of unauthorized applications instead of a full unlock. "The purplera1n jailbreak will free your iPhone from the limitations imposed on it by AT&T and Apple. After jailbreaking, a user will be able to customize the iPhone with home-screen wallpapers and third-party ringtones. But the biggest advantage of jailbreaking is the support of unapproved apps such as iBlackList (blacklists and whitelists for contacts) and many others."

Submission + - Flyclear shuts down operations (latimes.com)

torrentami writes: Flyclear sent out emails to its subscribers today informing them that as of 11 p.m. PST they will cease operations. Flyclear was a pioneer in speeding customers through security at airports and had planned on expanding to large events. The service, where it was available, offered a first class security experience for travelers willing to fork over $200 a year and their biometrics. Customers are now left holding their Flyclear cards with encrypted biometrics. The question now becomes, what happens to all that information? This is not the first time Flyclear has been in the news. A laptop containing customer records was reportedly missing from the San Francisco International airport recently but then turned up shortly thereafter. Another casualty of the recession's downturn in business travel.
