Comment Marketing BS ... (Score 1) 80

I call BS on the explanation ... those "probabilistic methods" are already implemented by most navigation programs, placing you not at the location of the GPS lock, but on the nearest street considering direction of travel.
Also, who needs 1.5m accuracy for navigation? I've not had any destination that required me to be exact down to anything less than 5m ... even street cutoffs typically do not need to be down to that scale ...

Now, if they can spit out the coordinates actually down to 1.5m repeatedly for the same location, with me moving more or less erratically in between, and the program being stopped and started again, I will concede my argument ...

Comment Much unlike "regular" consumers ... (Score 1) 262

Unlike large companies, the regular consumer in Germany doesn't profit from the ever decreasing cost of electricity ... prices keep going up, despite the falling prices on the energy market. Thanks to guaranteed prices for producers of renewable energy, the EEG-Umlage (Erneuerbare Energien Gesetz, renewable energy law) - which is something like an additional tax - has increased from about 0.02€/kWh to almost 0.07€/kWh between 2010 and 2017. Interestingly, this tax doesn't have to be paid by "energy-intensive" producing companies, like steel production etc., so - thanks to successful lobbying - the people have to pay the big companies' part, too ... typically, Germans have to pay around 0.32€ per kWh of electricity ... while electricity companies pay something like 0.05-0.06€ on the open market ...
While the EEG has succeeded in increasing the production of renewable energy, as usual the politicians have failed in writing a law that is halfway balanced ... so private customers are paying the bill for companies ...

Isn't anything Trump and the GOP nuts are doing (or want to do) putting corporate profits over the people? Anyway, the reason for over-booking is understandable (and also makes sense from more than just the economic PoV), but airlines should be forced to NOT involuntarily deny transport to passengers ... that way, they could more or less auction off seats on the flight ... just make the airline increase the payment they offer until the required number of passengers agree to postpone their flight ... yes it will be more expensive for the airline, but at the moment the airline is the only one that has advantages out of the current system (apart from possibly lower fairs)

Comment Ever since my G1 ... (Score 1) 215

I've been running custom roms ever since my first Android phone (G1). As others have rightfully posted, phone makers do not provide updates for much more of the initial 1-2 years, plus most manufacturers have lots of junk on their setup that you can't get rid of otherwise. Not even going to start about the delays until updates are released.
I do understand that there is little reason for a company to support a phone that's more than a generation back, as for one, many customers seem to swap their phones every 1-2 years, and supporting the old phones for longer would a) only cost money for a quickly diminishing amount of users and b) possibly keep people from buying new phones for the new OS they have.
I typically replace a phone once the technical issues I have with it outweigh get on my nerves enough ... (like decreasing battery capacity, actual defects, etc.) I'd probably still be using my Nexus 4 if the touch screen wouldn't have a dead vertical AND horizontal area... after that, I got an "old" S5, upgraded it with Cyanogen within 10 minutes of getting it ... up to "N" now, and will probably use it until it too dies of old age ;) Not what phone manufacturers would like their customers to do :)

Comment "Diets" are the wrong thing, anyway! (Score 1) 256

The typical concept of a "diet" (as in, temporarily changing how/what/how much you eat) is the problem here ... if you eat "a" and are fat, then eat "b" for a while to lose weight, and once you do go back to eating "a", why would you expect anything else than regaining the weight? People need to stop the concept of a diet, and instead change the way and what they eat ... there are enough studies and science around food to show that meats, sugars, fat, processed foods etc are the cause for overweight and obesity, and by changing to more nutritional-value based foods not only the body loses weight, but many other civilization sicknesses are prevented or at least greatly reduced ...
