Submission + - The fashion line designed to trick surveillance cameras (theguardian.com)

Freshly Exhumed writes: Automatic license plate readers, which use networked surveillance cameras and simple image recognition to track the movements of cars around a city, may have met their match, in the form of a T-shirt. Or a dress. Or a hoodie. The anti-surveillance garments were revealed at the DefCon cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas on Saturday by the hacker and fashion designer Kate Rose, who presented the inaugural collection of her Adversarial Fashion line. Rose credits a conversation with a friend, the Electronic Frontier Foundation researcher Dave Maass, for inspiring the project: “He mentioned that the readers themselves are not very good,” she said. “They already read in things like picket fences and other junk. I thought that if they’re fooled by a fence, then maybe I could take a crack at it.”

Submission + - Linus Torvalds prepares to wave goodbye to Linux floppy drives (zdnet.com)

Freshly Exhumed writes: When Linus Torvalds first created Linux in 1991, he built it on a 386-powered PC with a floppy drive. Things change. In 2012, Torvalds bid the i386 processor adieu saying, "I'm not sentimental. Good riddance." Now, it's the floppy drive's turn to bid Linux adieu. Torvalds has declared the floppy drive project "orphaned." Why? Because floppy drives have become historical relics. No one's using them. Indeed, Jií Kosina, the Czech Linux kernel developer in charge of the floppy drive driver, said he "no longer has working hardware."

Submission + - Unprecedented heat wave near North Pole (www.cbc.ca)

Freshly Exhumed writes: Weather watchers are focused on the world's most northerly community, which is in the middle of a record-breaking heat wave. "It's really quite spectacular," said David Phillips, Environment Canada's chief climatologist. "This is unprecedented." The weather agency confirmed that Canadian Forces Station Alert hit a record of 21 C on Sunday. On Monday, the military listening post on the top of Ellesmere Island had reached 20 C by noon and inched slightly higher later in the day.

Submission + - iOS 12.2 'Sock Puppet' Jailbreak Exploit Released on Github

Freshly Exhumed writes: In a treat for the iOS jailbreak community, Pwn20wnd has released unc0ver v3.3.0 betas 1 and 2 to the general public with official support for all firmware versions up to iOS 12.2. The exploit, named Sock Puppet, is intended to work on all A7-A11 devices bit excludes A12(X) devices. In a follow-up Tweet, Pwn20wnd added that the exploit appears to be broken on 4K devices (namely the A7 and A8 varieties) at the time of this writing, but he is looking into fixing this and notes that the Sock Puppet exploit brings with it some reliability issues.

Submission + - SPAM: iOS 12.2 'Sock Puppet' Jailbreak Exploit Revealed

Freshly Exhumed writes: In what could only be described as a surprising treat for the jailbreak community, Pwn20wnd released unc0ver v3.3.0 betas 1 and 2 to the general public on Thursday with official support for all firmware versions up to iOS 12.2. This means that in addition to the previously-supported iOS 11.0-12.1.2, unc0ver now supports iOS versions 12.1.3, 12.1.4, and 12.2. From what we can gather, the Sock Puppet exploit is intended to work on all A7-A11 devices, and so naturally, it excludes A12(X) devices. In a follow-up Tweet, Pwn20wnd added that the exploit appears to be broken on 4K devices (namely the A7 and A8 varieties) at the time of this writing, but he is looking into fixing this. While the addition of this new exploit is wonderful news for potential jailbreakers who’ve been waiting for the opportunity to pwn their devices, Pwn20wnd does note that the Sock Puppet exploit brings with it some “reliability” issues. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to do much about this, as it’s par for the course for this particular exploit.

Submission + - Boeing falsified records of new 787 that leaked fuel, faces more 737 Max woes (www.cbc.ca)

Freshly Exhumed writes: Boeing staff falsified records for a 787 jet built for Air Canada which developed a fuel leak ten months into service in 2015. In a a statement to CBC News, Boeing said it self-disclosed the problem to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration after Air Canada notified them of the fuel leak. The records stated that manufacturing work had been completed when it had not. This revelation comes at a time that the FAA has announced further technical woes with Boeing's 737 Max jet's stabilizer trim, although the FAA did not elaborate if the problem could be solved with a software upgrade or would require a physical fix.

Submission + - Massive Desjardins Group data breach caused by employee who's since been fired (straight.com)

Freshly Exhumed writes: The Quebec-based Desjardins Group has admitted to being victimized by one of the largest data breaches in Canadian history. Laval police informed the financial-services giant that personal information of more than 2.9 million members has been shared with people outside of the organization. This includes 2.7 million people and 173,000 businesses. "This situation is the outcome of unauthorized and illegal use of our internal data by an employee who has since been fired," Desjardins said in a statement. "In light of these events, and given the circumstances, additional security measures were put in place on all accounts." Desjardins, which is the largest federation of credit unions in North America, will be informing people by letters if they've been affected.

Submission + - SPAM: New Report: High Likelihood of Human Civilization Coming to an End in 2050 1

Freshly Exhumed writes: A harrowing scenario analysis of how human civilization might collapse in coming decades due to climate change has been endorsed by a former Australian defense chief and senior royal navy commander. The analysis, published by the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration, a think-tank in Melbourne, Australia, describes climate change as “a near- to mid-term existential threat to human civilization” and sets out a plausible scenario of where business-as-usual could lead over the next 30 years. The paper argues that the potentially “extremely serious outcomes” of climate-related security threats are often far more probable than conventionally assumed, but almost impossible to quantify because they “fall outside the human experience of the last thousand years.” On our current trajectory, the report warns, “planetary and human systems [are] reaching a ‘point of no return’ by mid-century, in which the prospect of a largely uninhabitable Earth leads to the breakdown of nations and the international order.”

Submission + - GNOME app devs: Please Don't Theme Our Apps (stopthemingmy.app) 2

Freshly Exhumed writes: In an open letter from independent app developers to the wider GNOME community, they argue that safeguarding the fully intended functionality and design of their apps is practically impossible when distributions apply arbitrary themes and design imperatives of their own that may break or muddle functionality and visual cues. They imply that guilty distributions thus force unnecessary rework and fragmentation upon them, and so are politely asking that re-theming of their apps please stop.

Submission + - Is wearing earbuds with a dead phone still distracted driving? Court says Yes 1

Freshly Exhumed writes: RCMP officers spotted a man driving with his iPhone with earbuds plugged in. The phone was not in his hands nor on his lap, was not playing music or video, and the driver was not using it to talk to someone or navigate. The battery was, in fact, completely dead. Nonetheless, a judge has ruled that "by plugging the earbud wire into the iPhone, the defendant had enlarged the device, such that it included not only the iPhone (proper) but also attached speaker or earbuds," he wrote. "Since the earbuds were part of the electronic device and since the earbuds were in the defendant's ears, it necessarily follows that the defendant was holding the device (or part of the device) in a position in which it could be used, i.e. his ears." On the question of the battery, the judge said he relied on a 2015 precedent set in a Canadian provincial court, which says that holding an electronic device in a position where it could be used constitutes an offence, even if it is temporarily not working.

Freshly Exhumed writes: Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has revealed that senior White House advisor Jared Kushner’s lawyer admitted in December that his client “continues to use” WhatsApp to conduct official White House business. The chairman also said that a lawyer for Ivanka Trump and Mr. Kushner told the committee late last year that they additionally used private email accounts for official White House business in a way that may have violated federal records laws.
