Comment Easy (Score 2) 158

50 years ago I wrote COBOL in near-plain language clear enough for the industrial client to check the logic from the source, with meaningful data-names. We input it on 80-column cards which had been 'interpreted' (ie content auto-printed in plaintext along the top of each card, to make debugging easier - just switch card/s), and the pack 'compiled' overnight, with 4 magical tape decks flipping away while we drank cocoa (sometime with rum) - hard drives weighed half a ton then, and only Government had them. With all the resources now available, things seem to have gone way downhill since then.

On some installations, it changes file associations so that online pdfs are opened by new Chrome instead of Acrobat. But in my country, government forms to be filled in won't work unless in a normal pdf reader. Had to change back the file associations for several cousins too. Check now and revert, if you haven't noticed this!

Comment Survey first (Score 1) 110

A hint to 'App' developers, whatever the source. Before making technical decisions, sample-survey the population you would like to be most active. See what cellphones they actually have (eg what version of Android, what available memory) and ensure that it will work for the majority. Note that it is quite possible that the older people who would be most at risk will have the least up-to-date handsets, and can't update even if they know how to. The fact that a system is technically possible does not guarantee that it is practically feasible.

Comment Carbon dioxide (Score 1) 126

You don't 'struggle to breathe' when short of oxygen. That's caused by an excess of carbon dioxide. So if the CO2 diffuses enough, the patient can still be dangerously low on O2, without showing distress. Buy a cheap oximeter for your finger and get used to your own readings - lower than 94% and you are in real trouble.
