Pirates as a Marketplace 214

John Riccitiello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, made some revealing comments in an interview with Kotaku about how the company's attitudes are shifting with regard to software piracy. Quoting: "Some of the people buying this DLC are not people who bought the game in a new shrink-wrapped box. That could be seen as a dark cloud, a mass of gamers who play a game without contributing a penny to EA. But around that cloud Riccitiello identified a silver lining: 'There's a sizable pirate market and a sizable second sale market and we want to try to generate revenue in that marketplace,' he said, pointing to DLC as a way to do it. The EA boss would prefer people bought their games, of course. 'I don't think anybody should pirate anything,' he said. 'I believe in the artistry of the people who build [the games industry.] I profoundly believe that. And when you steal from us, you steal from them. Having said that, there's a lot of people who do.' So encourage those pirates to pay for something, he figures. Riccitiello explained that EA's download services aren't perfect at distinguishing between used copies of games and pirated copies. As a result, he suggested, EA sells DLC to both communities of gamers. And that's how a pirate can turn into a paying customer."

Modern Warfare 2 Not Recalled In Russia After All 94

thief21 writes "After claims that console versions Modern Warfare 2 had been recalled in Russia due to complaints from politicians and the gaming public over the infamous airport slaughter scene, it turns out the stories were completely untrue. Activision never released a console version of the game in Russia." Instead, they simply edited the notorious scene out of the PC version. They did this of their own volition, since Russia doesn't have a formal ratings committee.

Take a moment to think what will happen to you when/if the oil runs out.

No reason to panic, aside from the obvious losing your car, you'll start riding your bike and also go back to a mode of existence that most of our ancestors took for granted and which is much more in tune with nature, hopefully, due to lessons learned in retrospect. You'll have to make do without your plasma TV, go back to using cotton and rubber insulated cords, everything on store shelves will start appearing without the insane packaging and in glass jars instead of plastic. It'll be locally made stuff or local and organically grown. Hey, most advertising billboards will disappear, nice! It will no longer make any sense to live in the suburbs, so cities become towns and everyone moves back to the towns or countryside. The best jobs will be in the trades - carpentry, masonry, etc. In general, it'll be back to the simpler and less wasteful life, which I'd argue was better anyway.

OH, no laptops, no PC's, thus no slashdot either. OH GOD, kill yourself now!!!

I've also come to mistrust hi-tech in a marine environment.

If my diesel runs away, I know of at least two methods to stop it, and can usually diagnose and solve other mechanical problems. If the steering fails, I know how to access and repair the steering components, but if I can't then I at least know how to steer by sail alone. If the electric fails I can systematically isolate the fault, or just sail without. If the plumbing fails I can likewise isolate the cause and have the equipment on hand to repair it or stop the leak. In essence, I've become a plumber, mechanic, electrician, carpenter, engineer, etc.

But I think most yachties are more like car owners, they don't want to know, they just pay others to fix it.

I tell you, knowledge is freedom. The less you understand the workings of something, the more enslaved you are.

It's kind of interesting how communism led to this, and this was the main argument everyone had against it and socialism, and now "democracy" or "the democratic republic" is leading to pretty much the same thing. So I guess democracy no longer works either. What are our alternatives?
