coondoggie writes "The longest-running search for radio signals from alien civilizations is receiving 500 times more data from an upgraded telescope and better frequency coverage than project planners anticipated, meaning the SETI@home project is in dire need of more desktop computers to help crunch the data. New, more sensitive receivers on the world's largest radio telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and better frequency coverage are generating 500 times more data for the project than before, project leaders said in a release. SETI@home software has been upgraded to deal with this new data as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) enters a new era and offers a new opportunity for those who want to help find other civilizations in the universe. http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/23469"

  • "Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory has signed up more than 5 million interested volunteers and boasts the largest community of dedicated users of any Internet computing project: 170,000 users on 320,000 computers."

That quotation tells me that most of the 'interested volunteers' were afraid that a piece of software was using 99-100% of the available CPU cycles on their system, since so many of them apparently dropped out.
Properly designed computer systems are designed to be able to run 24/7 at 100% CP
    • Agreed---let your computers run 24/7--they need the exercise ;) If you're afaid of BOINC having "free rein" of your CPU cycles, it's a VERY simple thing to change in your preferences; it can be set to run only during certain hours or only when the computer isn't in use...or god forbid (wink, wink), even while it's in use.In fact, BOINC has a few projects available that don't even use CPU cycles! And if you do choose to add BOINC to your system and need some assistance getting it tweaked, stop by http://ww [setiusa.net]
  • I have been running Seti since 9 Jan 2000. My job sorta dictates that I have a small computer lab, the machines just run (24/7/365). Yes I do have machines that have been processing Seti Workunits and returning results for years on end. The laptop I just retired has ran (almost continously for over 3.5 years). They run fine and are probably better off than a machine is turned off allowed to cooldown and then started and put immediately to work. The Purposes of Seti were to See if Seti could find intelligen

Machines certainly can solve problems, store information, correlate, and play games -- but not with pleasure. -- Leo Rosten
