njdube (965445) writes "It's a risky long shot that burns up money and might never, ever pay off. So is searching for intelligent creatures on unseen worlds worth the candle? After all, aren't there better ways to use our monies and technical talents than trying to find something that's only posited to exist: sentient beings in the dark depths of space?"

    If it is tax money being spent on this endeavor, then you do have the right to question it. If however it is private funds, what difference does it make how people spend their money? If SETI does end up finding ET, then it would go down as one of the most important discoveries ever made.
