DrEnter (600510) writes "A man in Bangalore, India was wrongfully arrested and imprisoned for 50 days after being misidentified as the individual who posted images deemed insulting to a revered historical figure. The Indian police asked for, and Google provided, the IP address of the user which was then given to the ISP Airtel, who misidentified it as belonging to someone it didn't. That someone than spent the next 50 days in jail (including 3 weeks AFTER the real individual was caught). Disturbingly, when questioned if the authorities provided a court order or merely asked for the anonymous poster's info., Google was hazy about the answer, only saying that they complied with Indian law."

    • Google gave the authorities an IP address. The real lesson here is that an IP address is not a person. If this guy is a registered Orkut user Google could have given the Indian authorities more personal information. For some reason they had to get that info from the ISP. So, had the police done their job, or had the ISP not had its head up its ... then they would have gotten the right perp the first time. Seriously, are we going to start seeing posts like: "Google takes a wee, Nintendo counter sues"?

I disagree that Google == Evil here. In the end Google gave them the wrong IP address so they couldn't arrest anyone for such a stupid crime. I guess you could see it as evil if you come from India.. such is the problem with a word such as "evil". What is evil to one is not evil to another.

Anyway calling Google evil at every opportunity is just childish. The world isn't black and white, grow up!
