I'm amazed by the number of my IT coworkers who are college drop outs... not the Bill Gates kind (drop out for a business opportunity and get rich). These guys flunked out of college (less than a 2.0 GPA). They had such bad grades that they could not meet the minimum requirements to graduate. Today, they are employed by a university (which is supposed to value education) as Sys Admins and IT Managers and many of them earn 50K — 80k per year, some earn more than this. I don't get it... why are so many college flunk-outs working in IT? I mean, how many professions allow this type of thing? Also, why do university's employee them? Why should private business hire professional IT workers with college degrees when many universities don't require them?"
