+ - Can I buy the Classic interface? 3

Submitted by Max Hyre
Max Hyre (1974) writes "LWN almost went under a number of years ago because its volunteer editors couldn't afford to keep it up. The readers rose up and insisted that they be allowed to pay for it.

Can we do the same for Classic?

I'm a nerd. I read. I'm the one in the museum ignoring the display and reading the description. I want text, easily accessible, clearly laid out, and plenty of it. I'll pay to keep the UI I know and love.

The Beta has none of those characteristics. The Beta site is repellent, unusable, and unneeded. I won't use it, and if ``Classic'' goes away, I won't visit /., and it'll be a pity.

How much do you actually receive in revenue for each user? I suspect I'll match it to keep the status quo. Ask us what it's worth to us. I'd certainly pay $1/month, and would think about $5/month. I bet that I'm not alone."

    I've just now registered "AltSlashdot.org".

I intend to run a site much like Slashdot used to be - better articles, less decoration and less "in your face" functionality. I'm revewing and getting comfortable with slashcode right now.

I'm looking for volunteers to help with setup and running the site. If the site becomes profitable, I intend to hire from the pool of volunteers. If you've ever wanted to participate in a site like Slashdot, here's your chance!

I'm particularly in need of people who can:

    • Set up and manage a high-traffic site (servers, load-balancers, data sites, &c)
    • Edit story submissions
    • HTML, CSS, and script creation/bugfix/repair

    Contact me if interested

It was years ago, but Bruce Perens used to have a "technocrat.net" domain and ran it as an alt for slashdot.

And I used to submit articles on it.

I still remember two of the articles - One about cellphone smuggling (cellphone was HUGE back then) in which people smuggling cellphone by stuffing it into female's private parts, and the other one about a British woman who fainted in Tesco supermarket with her battery-operated vibrator still attached, and vibrating.

If at first you don't succeed, you must be a programmer.
