+ - The NEW Current Status of Wireless 1

PalletBoy (913853) writes "I submitted a question on Monday September 12, 2005 @ 02:20PM to /. entitled "What is the Current Status of WiMAX?". 8 years later we are finally up and running on microwave hops from tower to tower directly back to Fiber. The RTT's between our location and the fiber pop are averaging 7ms. This tech is way cheaper than the combo of DSL and T1s we had (roughly 1/3) and is also 12x faster and scalable to gigabit levels once our biz requires it.

With the new possibility of the spectrum auction and the coming
5G tech, how soon before DSL, Cable, and fiber tech like Fios get added to The Big Internet Museum?"

The NEW Current Status of Wireless

  • This is interesting you bring this up. I've had discussions with other folks who think that fiber will one day take over wireless. I think it's a case by case basis where no one technology rules them all. In some areas, such as your remote location, wireless may be more cost effective to deploy since there's no need to put poles in the ground every few hundred feet.

In extremely dense areas though, like down-town Phili, wireless may or may not work as well as Fiber due to the sheer bandwidth requirement
