An anonymous reader writes "On Friday Linode announced a precautionary password reset due to an attack despite claiming that they were not compromised. The attacker has claimed otherwise, claiming to have obtained card numbers and password hashes. Password hashes, source code fragments and directory listings have been released as proof. Linode has yet to comment on or deny these claims."

That post does not address the security concerns of this latest report, which is that credit card numbers have been exposed due to poor encryption practices.

Did you miss that the link you provided is the same one in the "On Friday Linode announced" part?

  • How does this keep happening? "[x] site hacked" is just so horribly common.

System security personnel are up against specialists, and possibly hundreds of them. When one hits a dead end they hand off to someone else with a specialized approached to that particular dead end. Crack, now its handed along to the next person who has the key to the next locked door. It can be like running a relay race when you can't hand off to someone when you tire. The root of the white hat problem is trust between security organizations. Even the pentagon is trying to bolster its cyber Command force
