davidwr writes "Before passing the Video Privacy Protection Act Amendments Act, the Senate dropped an amendment which would require the feds to get warrants before looking at mail older than 6 months that is stored on a 3rd-party server.

This means the status quo, dating from the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act, remains."

    I'm pretty sure that's not true. Sen. Leahy, who wrote this bill and is quite passionate about it, applauded the passage of the Video Privacy Protection Act and said the ECPA update is well on its way: “I congratulate Representative Goodlatte for his work on this bill,” Leahy said. “I look forward to working with him to update another critical digital privacy law, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act in the new year.” See http://www.leahy.senate.gov/ [senate.gov]
