+ - Prehistoric Rhino Skull Found Preserved in Volcanic Rock

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "Researchers have found the fossilized skull of a rhinoceros that died in a volcanic eruption some 9.2 million years ago. A team of researchers led by Pierre-Olivier Antoine from the University of Montpellier, France, examined the fossils of a large two-horned rhino preserved in volcanic rock in Turkey. The rhino, scientifically known as Ceratotherium neumayri, belonged to the late Miocene period and was commonly found in the Eastern Mediterranean region."
