+ - Huge jump in Amazon deforestation-> 1

Submitted by rhettb
rhettb (1067382) writes "New data from the Brazilian government shows an area of Amazon rainforest 10 times the size of Manhattan was cleared in the past 2 months, an increase of more than 400% over last year. A proposed weakening of the country's forest code is blamed. Farmers and ranchers believe they will be granted amnesty for illegal logging."

  • The problem here is that Brazil doesn't enforce its existing laws so what confidence can we have that reducing the reserve requirement from 80% to 50% will be respected by people cutting down the rainforest?
