+ - Fullscreen applications or window managers? 1

larppaxyz (1333319) writes "Going back in time, when 14" displays and 1024x768 resolution were big deal we really didn't have choice but to run our applications fullscreen/maximized. You just could not fit enough text and UI elements to small window. Displays and resolutions got better and we still are running our browsers, text editors and utilities maximized. Our mobile phones and tablets have UI's that are minimalistic with big and clear buttons and common tasks are replaced with gestures. Is this trend coming to desktop computer UI's also? Do you like old school window managers more than full screen applications? Does it feel easier to just switch current application instead on moving around windows? Is it just issue with our current window managers we are using (or not using)? What does this all mean to UI desing in future?"

  • Here you will find wide spectrum of scenarios (all worthy of "Insightful" of course...), even if some of them would cryptic, to say the least, to your average user. Oh, yeah, and those will continue maximizing or using some other barely less simplistic (!='minimalistic' in /. terminology) methods - many of them can't completely grasp full multitasking.
