Be it text messages, power consumption, eBay auctions, or even where you go for dinner (check-ins anyone?). One small start-up believes that all the usage and consumption data a person generates on a daily basis is not only valuable, but should be profitable for the consumer as well.
"Statz was founded on the simple premise that everyone should own, control, and benefit from their personal data. To enable that premise, the Statz web site is the first marketplace for consumers to securely and anonymously own, control, and sell all their personal and activity data. Every time a consumer's data is sold, Statz will pay the consumer. That's you — and it's that simple."
Reading through their membership terms and privacy policy gives a fairly straightforward view of how they wish to run things. You "own" all the data you upload, and choose what you'd like to "sell". You can remove your data at any time, and it is gone from their servers for good--of course, if you "sold" it to a vendor already, that's not coming back to you. Everything from cell-phone calling/texting history, eBay selling reports, to Skype usage is all available to be sold. No personally identifiable information is sent, and you can control specifically what is sold and given out.
The whole premise, it seems, is to make money on your usage data, by selling it anonymously. The real question here: are you willing to put all this information up for grabs for profit? They are currently in an alpha evaluation period, and if you sign up now you can make 3x the normal rate for all information uploaded during the alpha period, for up to a year after their launch the final product."
