J. Dzhugashvili writes "A member of the Tech Report forums reports that his iPad's charging cord literally melted in the middle of the night, and the iPad it was connected to became searing hot—hot enough that the user dropped it and caused some damage. Melted charger cables and searing-hot (or combusting) batteries are nothing new, and they've led to mass battery recalls in the past. After getting in touch with Apple, however, the user was simply told he was responsible for damaging the device by dropping it, and that the iPad was out of warranty for having jailbroken software installed."

A few minor additions/clarifications: (Score:2)
I'm pretty sure that the insanely hot iPad melted the cable, the cable does not appear to have been generating heat (outside melted/scorched, inside better or OK in places).
The iPad was really impressively hot. I think it was over the boiling temp of water.
As one of the comments put it... (Score:2)
... this is an open-and-shut violation of the Magnuson-Moss Act. Apple cannot deny a warranty due to installation of unrelated software, no way, no how. If they actually try something that stupid, they'll just end up having to trot Steve Jobs out at another press conference.
Maybe they will offer him a free Bumper? (Score:1)
