Possible Virtual Console Titles for Wii Launch 92

The site PlayNintendo has up a list of possible launch titles for the Wii Virtual Console. Nothing on the list is particularly surprising, with classics like Sonic, various Mario titles, Metroid, and Castlevania filling out the roster. The article author goes on to discuss his source for the information, sharing additional tidbits he's learned. "I have received info from them before that has turned out true, including a tip back before E3 that Wii could ship as early as September with 20 titles. With the fact that Broadway has been in Nintendo's hands for some time, the console could, in fact, ship late September. However, they also stated that October is much more likely and if Nintendo did decide to wait, there would be more like 30 titles for launch. With the launch list continuously growing, that one has all but been confirmed as true too." With Nintendo's big announcement due later this week, we shouldn't have long to wait before this is confirmed or disproven.

  • Why not all titles? One could fit nearly every NES game on a single dvd. Storing these old (yet great) games on a server would be trivial. The Big N owns all the rights to them. Why not make all of them available at launch?
    • Because instead of selling you one product with all the games for, say, $60, they can sell you TEN products with 20-30 games for $40 each and make a LOT more money.

Trivial - if there's a limited selection you:

      1) Narrow the selection users have
      2) Can herald new virtual console games every week

The first one means that users don't have too much to choose from, which means they'll come to a decision sooner, and they're more likely to come to a decision. Also the limitation will encourage players to buy new games as well as virtual console games.

The latter keeps interest in the virtual console high over the many years the Wii will be around. It also means that new games ca

I have a CD with every NES/SNES game made on it. I don't play the games, but I do plan on getting a few of them on the Wii. By releasing them at regular intervals you maintain interest in the platform and drive sales. If every game were available at launch, everyone would go grab their 5 or whatever favorite games and forget about the service. If you see an announcement that ReallyCoolGame 4 is available next week, you are more likely to go grab it and possibly buy other stuff at the same time.
    • They could also be trying to create custm control schemes for these titles that might allow them to take full advantage of the Wii controller's motion sensors, instead of just the normal NES controller scheme. This was implied in the earliest promotional ad for the Wii, where a guy was bouncing his Wii controller around, synced with the sound of Mario jumping.
    • I assume you mean all Nintendo NES games, as Nintendo doesn't own the rights to 3rd party games, unless you know something I don't. (ie: If Nintendo owned the rights to the NES Megaman games, why have there been compilations on non-Nintendo platforms).

They probably just want to spread them out, rather than dump the entire catalogue online all at once, it's probably more for business / marketing than technical stuff. (Although I'd assume there is a bit of extra work to "package" them for the Wii perhaps as w
      • Nintendo never bought the rights to the Mega-man games, the developers paid Nintendo for distribution rights for their platform because without it they wouldn't be allowed access due to the 'lock-out' chip that was built into the NES. The reason the games can come out on other systems is because Capcom still own's the rights to them. However, Nintendo can still sell the games because of the distribution rights they acquired back in the 80's.

Thank you very much for pointing this out. Despite Slashdot constantly covering topics like Free Software, copyright infringement, and fair use, it's really sad that we still get posts like the OP. What I find interesting here is that some of the games are not traditional Nintendo titles:

Bonk's Adventure - A Turbo Grafix 16 title (A great system, IMHO, since the same cartridge could be used on the main console AND the hand held console!)

How about a new punch out? Come on Nintendo, punch out and super punch out were among my favorite games. However we are long overdue for a punch out on a new console. They could easily make a fun game on one of their machines, hell the original punch out arcade came with dual monitors...hmmm...let me think...maybe there is another Nintendo console that features 2 screens.

Perhaps Nintendo is busy trying how to keep the "Nigga Stole My Bike" cut scene [ytmnsfw.com] from the original Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! game from offending its customers of African descent.

    • You have to remember that this small list of games is Nintendo's way of testing the waters. They want to see if people are willing to purchase these games and if they're satisfied with the service. If plenty of people show their support by purchasing VC games, then more companies will jump on board and offer more games.

For some more solid VC game titles, head to the ESRB rating page at http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp [esrb.org] and select to search for Wii titles. Scroll to the bottom and, you guessed it, there are some rather old titles listed. The list:
    • Sonic the Hedgehog
    • Ecco the Dolphin

    • Columns
    • Toejam & Earl
    • Ristar

Of course there's no guarantee that these are VC titles but I'd guess it's very likely. Personally I can't wait for GOLDEN AXE - the game so awesome that my mum beat it.

      • The nunchuck can sense motion, but I don't think it senses it the same way as the Wii-mote, and the tether might get in the way of full rhumba posing action. Plus, the Wii-motes have the internal speakers so they could potentially play the sound of a maraca when you shake it. Maracas themselves have a bit of sound delay, so they would probably sound pretty accurate.
