The Wizard Released on DVD 75

The Wired Game|Life Column points out that something momentous happened yesterday: The Wizard was released on DVD. From the post: "And I do not understand how any sane person couldn't be happy about this. Generally recognized even by the small children who saw it in 1989 as being a ninety-minute ad for Nintendo, The Wizard is quite frankly a masterpiece of our time. It starred Super Mario Bros. 3." From 1up's post on the release: "Appropriate celebrations include sending Wizard cards (depicting Fred Savage in all his pre-teen glory, natch), the decorating of the Wizard tree (ornaments should resemble characters from Super Mario 3), and wearing the Wizard celebratory garments (also known as the Nintendo Power Glove). I'm sure the lack of Blu-Ray release was simply an oversight, and not a monstrous snub by the higher-ups at Sony."

      I so wish! I do have an autographed WoS&T poster: I was a gopher/escort for Jitlov at a Phoenix convention years ago. I do have the 16mm short that was the basis for WoS&T, someone gave it to my film club when it was found on a mixed reel of 16mm shorts in the wreckage of a bar fire in Tucson.

      WoSAT is exactly what I was hoping for when I saw this and a previous /. headline. Thankfully I have a pretty high quality laserdisc rip on DVD. You could likely still find one as well on a rainy day (you know, a day that's a Bit Torrential).

      I thought it was for Wizards [imdb.com]. That was actually a good movie.

      Fortunately, that one is aready out on DVD.

      • Anyone who thinks Wizards was a good movie should first be smacked, and then made to watch the making of featurette on the DVD.

        For those too lazy, Ralph Bakshi continually blames George Lucas for stealing his budget, and repeatedly states that most of his inspiration came from the desire to draw elf girls with little or no clothes.

          Many portions of the movie were very good. Those were the ones made when the artist and the animators expected to be paid and before they left.
      • Wizards was crap. Fire and Ice is his masterpiece. Entirely rotoscoped, without the moronicness of Wizards. And yes, the chick is mostly-naked through the whole movie, so if you watched Wizards for that you'll still be happy.

      Well, for some insane reason I was hoping it was the Linux release of "Wizardry I: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord".

      You can try asking around alt.fan.mike-jittlov for DVD copies. There are a couple of versions floating around (based on the LD release) that, while unofficial, are approved (or at least okayed) by Mike Jittlov.

    If we ever got to the point where a video game was driven by an artificial intelligence so advanced that it could itself become a citizen of a country, then couldn't we literally have a movie _starring_ the video game itself?

    "Based on the hit video game 'Chessmaster 3035,' Chessmaster 3035 stars in: 'Chessmaster 3035, the Movie.'"

    Love to see Uwe Boll try to tackle that one.

      You shouldn't expect anything less from the communist propoganda campaign [aethiamud.org] - it targets children when they are very young as they are the most mallable to ideas. (Okay, bad running joke.)

        I never owned a PowerGlove for my Nintendo, so I never tried "GloveBall" or whatever game came with it. However, I did purchase a few PowerGloves for VR experimentation - I first hooked it up to my Amiga (using info from that old Byte magazine article), and played around with it using AMOS and Blitz Basic. Later on after I got my first PC-compatible (an Acer 486), I got it working under REND386, and later AVRIL.

    • Augh, I feel your pain. I need ReBoot on DVD like nobody's business. While we're at it, let's bring back the rest of my childhood with Transformers, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, and the original Power Rangers on DVD too.

      On the plus side, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and the Batman/Superman Animated Series are already arriving on DVD. My sister was kind enough to get me the Superman: The Animated Series Season 1 DVD for my birthday. :)

    Am I one of the only ones who thinks that it was actually a pretty decent film? Strip it of the Nintendo advertising, and it still is mostly about a few kids trying to help their autistic brother to a championship across the country, for the one thing he's a master at. It's based on "Tommy" by The Who, just replace "pinball wizard" with "video game wizard". Instead of being deaf, dumb, and blind, he's just deaf and dumb. Instead of his state being induced by having seen his mother having sex with some guy, he saw his twin sister die right in front of him. For a large scale drama, aimed at kids, it wasn't half bad at all. Only reason people couldn't take it very seriously is because of all the advertising, which was unfortunate.

        Coincidentally, the writers of the above post were also pretty dumb.
  • Unfortunately, though, it's going to be a pretty much barebones DVD. No special features, from what the article in Nintendo Power says about the DVD.
  • I don't remember much about this movie, although I'm pretty sure that I saw it sometime long ago. However, I do remember the rather cool video-game based cartoons that they used to have, including the Zelda flics on the Mario Bros show (which in itself sucked, but the Zelda cartoons were cool), Captain N, and some other cartoons along the same line.
