360 Shadowrun Title Partially Confirmed 49

Via Gamasutra, a mysterious outline on the FASA website of a quartet of Shadowrunners. This likely indicates that the much rumoured Shadowrun title for a Microsoft console will be making an appearance sometime soon. Hopefully even next week. From the article: "If true, this project will mark the first American Shadowrun video game in over twelve years, following games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Sega Genesis, which were developed by Beam Software and BlueSky Software, respectively." Ahh, the SNES version of Shadowrun. Being a Dog Shaman was never so much fun.

I'd be a rich man for every nickel I had for each night spent awake drinking pots of tea and eating boxes of KD while playing the tabletop RPG version of Shadowrun. Possibly one of the best RPGs, I couldn't have been happier or more surprised to read this article. D&D was kinda cool, but the SR dice rules always took the cake - and being based directly on William Gibson's vision of the future/the matrix, I have (for years) loathed Hollywood and Keanu Reeves thanks to SR.
  • Wow. Just wow. I played the SNES version endlessly (one of the better SNES RPGs in my opinion). I played the Genesis version (it had cyberspace!). I had no friends with which to ever play the tabletop version. I feel like the cyberpunk/hacker genre is woefully under represented in videogames. It makes me happy that someone is trying to fill in this gap.

A Shadowrun MMORPG would do really well. Imagine The Matrix Online without the suck and emphasis on h2h combat.

They could impliment a bunch of rules directly from the books. I'm envisioning a stop-action type of game. For example, imagine a combat situation. Like, turn based for each player but they don't have long to take their turn or decide what to do. You move half of your limit (displayed on the ground where your move limits are) and turn to shoot. The action goes pretty fast once the turns are decided. Complete with sports-like camera angles showing the action.

So our hero, half-crouching in a walk pops up for a surprise shot at a nearby gang member who is shooting at his friends. The member turns around just in time to see him, and the camera focuses on the look of surprise. It shows the dice roll in the window as he fires his shot, and it shows the dice roll for damage against him. Then the reaction of the target.

Instead of the watered-down shit they have for D&D Online.

Could be an awesome game, but no..
    • Sure a Shadowrun MMORPG that directly implemented the rules would be awsome, but if i had a nickle for every computer game based on a paper game that could have been awsome, i'd have... well probably around 310 dollars.

The truth is computer games and board games are very diffrent beast. I never thought I'd say that seeing as how I'm constantly saying they are the same, and they are in many respects. But the most substatial diffrence isn't that video games need to be real time or effectively use visual infor

I can only hope that it will happen. I wasn't planning to ever get a 360. This is probably the only thing that could convince me to buy one. If the game turns out halfway decent, I almost certainly will get one.

That game was a lot of fun. I wish they made like 5 of those games on the same engine.

I also enjoyed the Sega Genesis versions qiute a bit as well.

Look, those games were at least something, the storyline and the Showdowrun world is so, so so cool and there is so much that could be done with it. Frick, just about every video game could be based on that world. Imagine grand theft auto in SHADOWRUN world? That would rule!

That isn't to say the Shadowrun license doesn't bring anything new to the table, though. Here are a few possibilities, just off the top of my head:

Imagine getting a smartgun or smartgoggles and seeing helpful targeting info appear in the actual HUD.

Imagine this being that rare FPS that actually implements melee combat *well* and stylishly. Think of your typical razorgirl- wired reflexes could be represented by a Max Payne-ish slo

There's not really much rumor or myth to it, the game IS coming, according to Team Xbox [teamxbox.com]. Gamespot.com has a placemarker [gamespot.com] up for it, which probably isn't saying much alone.

Another Team Xbox story [teamxbox.com] mentions that a game artist's resume revealed that he had been working on high-poly count characters for Shadowrun for the last five years.

I have just enough karma pool and an Armtech grenade launcher that says the game will be here soon.

  • If they really want to do it right, a digital version of "that spoiled kid's" mom is going to jump out of the screen with a tray of 'ants on logs' for everyone playing. Later, the digital version of "your" dad complains about you getting a job, and to keep playing you have to cleverly word your rebuttal. Now that's a realistic RPG!
  • This is one of those obvious can't lose licenses (unless the game sucks) like Warhammer [warhammeronline.com]. Take elves, orcs and magic and add automatic weapons, fast cars, robots and the matrix, oh yeah and lets not forget badass american indian shamen. Talk about your geek imagination overload. With a world controlled by Megacorps that are constantly hiring rogue mercenary groups for various jobs, its perfect for open-ended GTA style questing. Please make this an MMO or and huge ass oblivion sytle RPG (with a coop mode). *w
  • I hope they release it for the PC as well. I have no intention of ever buying a 360, but Shadowrun was awesome.
  • _This_ would get me to get XBox360, even though I don't have an HD set. I would literally leave work early and go to Costco the moment this hits the shops.

IFF it's a MMORPG of course (or at least a coop multiplayer that can handle up to 8 in a party), so I can run with my chummers round the nation.

Hell, I'd quit WoW for this if they did it right.
  • This just might be the game to actually get me to stop using my 360 as a dvd player for my kids Baby Einstein vids... just think of the fun on Live - "Hoi Chummer, there is a heatwave coming down on a bunch of deckheads in the sprawl. We should geek that vatjob for Mr. Johnson and slot and run to the plex. You fraggin hose this, and I'll make sure your nothing but drek on a panzer tire." heh...
  • None of the Gibson books I read had trolls in them. The few times I could get a group together to play it, I ran CyberPunk [talsorian.com]. "All these flimsy sacks of water, hemming me in."
    • None of the Gibson books had magic either. The point was the setting was the same, as well as how they portrayed the matrix was the same as cyberspace in Neuromancer et al. Also, razorgirls, bionic parts, corporations controlling everything, body-market, dystopian future, yeah, I'd say it reeks of Gibson. They just added magic, which made it (IMHO) even cooler. Honestly, if you wanted to leave out the magic in it you could with little problem. Just allow humans (or mutants) and no magical groups.
      • The same argument could be made for Paranoia XP [mongoosepublishing.com], a comedy RPG. I just think Zonk saying "based directly on William Gibson's vision of the future/the matrix" about Shadowrun is misleading.
    • True, but that doesn't mean that Shadowrun was not based off of the ideas in Gibson's books (which it so obviously was). They added magic and trolls and elves because, well because they wanted to, but a lot of the other stuff draws directly from the books.
      • True, but saying Shadowrun is "based directly on William Gibson's vision of the future/the matrix" is enough of an overstatement to set off my purist alarm.

Maybe I overreacted, but I felt Gibson fans should know there are RPGs much closer to "William Gibson's vision", if they're really interested in that sort of thing.

I'm such a fan of the SNES and the genesis versions (I preferred the genesis version due to the "cyberspace hacking" interface), and I would happily plunk down over $400 to get the game and a 360 (knowing that I'll like the 360 in general, and this game being the game to make me take the plunge...).

Point being, of course, that it has to be done right... if they make a game worthy of the 360, in the Shadowrun universe (can you imagine onl
